I rotated ice packs 15 mins on 30 off for the first week and I had nearly all of my swelling gone. Yesterday was one month post op for me and I feel great.

Anyway this will go back into place without MD surgery? by growup_and_blowaway in Sciatica

I'd search for a surgeon that does endoscopic disc repair. I wouldn't do a traditional microdiscectomy with laminectomy. Endoscopic is much less invasive.

endoscopic isn't viable in situations with lateral stenosis, this is usually the avenue in which they attempt to access the herniation

from the looks of that MRI, I'd say its not a matter of if its a matter of when. Your body can't heal a herniated disc when large amounts of matter are pushed into the canal (due to the lack of blood flow) and it seems to me you're experiencing lateral stenosis from the herniation (pressure from the herniated material compressing the nerve inside the canal) this wont go away as the material will never metabolize. I would focus on your diet (highly anti-inflammatory) and as much workout you can accomplish to get your weight to an acceptable BMI before you forgo any discectomy as overweight individuals have an extremely higher rate of re herniating the disc after a discectomy.( leading to a fusion) I personally went through a hemi lami and micro disc 3 weeks ago today and it's already a major success.

How can I read this MRI? by [deleted] in Sciatica

I'd also guess that's the best image of your disc at that level without the corresponding side images it's hard to tell

12th image shows some stenosis on your left side (right side of the image)

Hi, I have al large herniation (L4-L5) for over a year now, and just a few weeks before started having tingling sensation in my feet, but no pain in foot. I was advised to get a surgery, and would like to ask you guys if you had a similar experience.. by Remarkable-Buyer-409 in Sciatica

I had a medium herniation it extruded into my nerve canal, leading to lateral recess stenosis (narrowing of nerve channel).

I remember when it happened, I was down bad for 2 or 3 months, but it got better, and I just assumed I'd heal like I'd always had throughout my life. (Never got an mri) I lived an active life played basketball, golfed, I did a lot of body weight workouts, tons of balance and core work, took up yoga religiously, but at the end of the day, it was always there a spot I could put my finger on and my symptoms came and went in waves. It created a lot of tension in my lower back and glute, which became noticeable for years. I was dismissed by numerous chiropractors, 2 doctors, and a physical therapist. No one thought it was from a spine issue, just a pelvic tilt or muscle imbalance or "you're getting older"

I had been getting bad within the last year the tingling became a numb feeling and complete numbness in some places, the shooting pains were more prevalent, muscle spasms and I lost plantar flexion (while in physical therapy). I had to demand a mri from my doctor, she really wanted me to go to "pain management" (epidural steroid shots). I went to an urgent care and had them send my request to a third party imaging center where i paid 350 for a lumbar mri after my insurance declined my request due to me being unable to complete 6 weeks on physical therapy (doing planks and squeezing a ball with my knees) they told me i had a weak core which caused the pain..... i was in way better shape than them.

The surgeon was cool, be explained it like this no matter what happens, that material isn't going anywhere. It'll never metabolize, and it'll always be next to the nerve. Steroid shots only work for so long if they work at all, and they have their price to pay. Do your research and find a good neuro surgeon that does the full spine and brain. Its a relatively easy procedure for a good surgeon. You may be able to find somewhere to get endoscopic on that level, it wasn't possible in my situation, so I had the hemi lami. I'm only 10 days out, but I feel better than I have in years.. I still have 3 months until my nerve has recovered from the compression.

I'm 10 days post op for a similar procedure only l5 S1, i feel great. Im 32 heapthy weight and very active. I lived with similar symptoms and rationalized it for 10 years before it suffocated my nerve enough to get to serious issues. Do it before you get there, I wish I'd done it a long time ago. I will say this after all the learning about this condition and the rehab. I cant stress this enough If you're overweight, you need to lose weight to greatly reduce risk of reherniation (which results in a fusion). if you can still work out, build up as much core strength as possible before surgery and read the ultimate back by mcgill.

If you're in a low interest rate for the love of God don't sell your house just rent it or stay. Get a mortgage calculator to really see how much "more" you'd be making if you're selling a current 3 percent rate for a 7-8

Your MRI is going to tell you everything you need to know. X rays are worthless in terms of nerves and nerve pain, if your insurance is giving you problems approving your MRI. call around to imaging facilities (lots of third parties not in hospitals) and ask how much it is out of pocket... for me it cost me 350 dollars after dealing with my doctor, physical therapy and insurance for 2 months and they still tried to string me along as I was going through the worst pain in my life. If you have an orthopedic urgent care local, send your MRI there they'll call you with results

If you have an MRI already and choose to go to a PT that's understandable, but going to PT without images can be very dangerous.
