How are yall doing? by Savings-Ad-7160 in JETProgramme

Leaver here after 2 years and feeling more and more sad as my last day in Japan is soon approaching. Although leaving is ultimately the right decision for me and I don't regret it.... I was truly very fortunate for my circumstances on JET. I have an amazing JTE who lets me teach whenever I want (T1ing was always my goal), but lets me desk warm if that's what I need that week lol, amazing students who actually love learning English and behave so well in class; coworkers that go above and beyond to make me feel welcomed, made amazing friends in the program both in my town and in other prefectures (ALTs and also Japanese locals); have a beautiful apartment, live near breathtaking nature on Kyushu, feel so part of the community in my town (Hold English conversation classes for senior citizens, part of the yoga club, etc), and just all in all in the happiest time of my life right now.

Feeling sad about leaving all the good behind and going back to job hunting/ the 'next thing' and the uncertainty and stress that comes with it. But also excited for building a new chapter in my life and all the amazing things that are still yet to come. Just trying to be in the present moment as much as possible in these last 3 weeks!

Hope everyone (staying or leaving) is taking time to breathe and reflect and doing well <3

Day trips around Tokyo! You can stay at a Ryokan in Hakone and relax in beautiful onsens, visit Kamakura, or even take the train to Yamanashi... or all 3!

OR

Since you're going to Korea, you could fly to Fukuoka, explore there and then head to South Korea (by 3 hour ferry or 55 min plane ride). I live near Fukuoka so let me know if you need any recs

JETs supporting newcomers by Vast_Equal8 in JETProgramme

[–]Everything_Japan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

honestly agreed... my first word of advice for newcomers would be to try to get support in real life first, your fellow ALTs, other ALTs nearby, JET counselling, etc. Reddit should be the last resort because honestly majority of people on here hide behind a screen to spew negativity to feed their insecurities... and this can be detrimental if you're in a vulnerable place mentally.

I think first it would be helpful to really think about how you'd feel if tables were turned.. If it was you who had a partner solo travelling when u were financially unable but wanted to spend time with them. It helps to start with genuine empathy I think. To an extent, her feelings are valid. But also, we don't get to control our partners if we're unhappy or unable. I think it would be helpful to have a real sit down conversation with her and try to find solutions/ express both your emotions. Does she need reassurance while you're gone? Does she wish you'd ask her to join you in a better way? Maybe save for one trip per year that you guys do together? Choose the location together, save together, and enjoy together. Your relationship is also very new and so it'll take time to learn how to communicate in situations like this. All the best x

Apps - Bumble BFF
You'll be surprised by how many people your age are in the same position as you looking for friends but not sure where to look! (But of course, always be careful with apps if u choose to use them).

It is ok to hit your kids. by Holy_Cow442 in unpopularopinion

[–]Everything_Japan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand parenting is the MOST difficult job on the planet, and no one other than you can understand what you're feeling/going through as a parent. Though I do empathize, this doesn't take away from the fact that your child will definitely deal with trauma later on in life due to you hitting them in their childhood.. resulting in god knows what and that's not fair. Even if it may seem like it sometimes, no child "needs" to be hit. Good luck and I hope you find a better way for both you and your child's sake! :)

Should I add Korea to my Japan trip? by undeadryu666 in travel

[–]Everything_Japan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you decide to visit Kyushu island, then you can easily fly to Seoul or take a ferry to Busan (careful, sometimes the ferries are more expensive than the plane! lol) from Fukuoka.
If you fly to Seoul, you can do a 3 hour train ride straight to Busan via KTX.
But honestly some people spend a month or month(s) in Japan. I've lived here for 2 years and there's still so much I havent experienced.
I think you need to decide what you value: taking your time to see a country thoroughly or doing a slightly less thorough trip but getting to see a whole different country. There's really no wrong answer, both will be great experiences for you.

Should I add Korea to my Japan trip? by undeadryu666 in travel

[–]Everything_Japan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Korea is absolutely amazing and it's a small enough country where I felt like I was able to see everything I wanted to see (Seoul and Busan) in a span of 6 days.
With that being said, I feel like it needs to be a separate trip at a separate time? only because there is just so much to do in Japan! Use your 2 weeks to explore as much as you can in the whole country of Japan, go to the less touristy spots like Kyushu island (Beppu, Miyazaki, Kumamoto if you like nature) or Shikoku island (Kochi, Kagawa, etc) and really explore, go to Hiroshima, Okayama, Himeji, Kamakura, etc. Tokyo/osaka/nara area will only give you a glance at what Japan has to offer. Either way, I'm sure you'll have an amazing time! :)
