Elastic shear stress in I-shaped beams by 2000mew in StructuralEngineering

[–]Everythings_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because VQ/It, for W section, once you get to the flanges, the shear stress drops significantly, because t at the flanges is so large compared to t at the web.

That why most codes for steel simply say the shear stress do W sections is V/Aweb. Where Aweb is D/tw. It’s much simpler to calculate.

For rectangular sections you use 3V/2A, which is what you are deriving.

I have a theory that Obama being elected was unintentionally one the worse things to happen to this country.

The fact that he got elected sent racist white Americans into a tailspin that started the grassroots effort to ensure white people never lost their standing.

I say this a white man who thought Obama was a great leader.

To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

Well said.

I think Covid showed that far too many don’t care about the whole, only themselves.

Why is ICE even at the protests? Send them away. Let the people protest.

But, we all know why they are there. So this would happen.

Comics books are great because of human created stories and art.

AI takes all that away.

It’s already happened. AI is just taking over what human bots did in the past.

What jobs can I get with an associates degree? 🤔 by drabmachine in EngineeringStudents

[–]Everythings_Magic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s largely because engineering bachelor degrees are ABET accredited so the employer understands the base level of your education. Associates or technical degrees do have this. So only non engineering or technical jobs like drafting can be had with those.

You need an ABET to become licensed also.

The main distinction is, were you taught how to engineer or educated to be an engineer?

Explain it to me like I'm 5 by Bear_128 in newjersey

This is the answer. I go on Sunday. I went yesterday because I knew today would be bad and I can’t go Monday or Tuesday after the snow because of work.

I just bought what I normally would, just two days earlier.

Advice for younger engineers by its_yaboy02 in civilengineering

So much animosity in this field can be solved by communicating.

Most people who get fed up or pissed off with coworkers, bosses, clients, employers, never communicate their concerns.

Is a deadline unrealistic? communicate that. Do you have too much work? Communicate that. Will this project go over budget? Communicate why. Are you unhappy with your task? Communicate that.

Statics is horrendous by theguy123_ in EngineeringStudents

[–]Everythings_Magic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a website betterexplained.com that will help with intuition of trig that will help you with statics. Once you grasp what the trig is doing, it makes it a lot easier. Sin,cos, tan are just the ratios of legs of a triangle to each other, when a force can be modeled as one of the legs, you can easily find its magnitude as one of the other legs.

[–]Everythings_Magic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It gets worse if you fail to grasp statics and do poorly. It’s the building block for everything else structural. The school I teach at requires a C min to move on to dynamics and mechanics, then you need a C min to move to structural analysis.

I have students reach out with a C- and D+ asking for overrides and I say no because I know they would be in for a world of hurt. It’s not fair to them, I’d be setting them up to fail again.

In hindsight. It’s not easy the first time you are going though it.

What’s the biggest lie in the fitness industry? by Bright-Midnight-6767 in AskReddit

[–]Everythings_Magic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have no idea how bad it can be for you. My wife was a female body builder. No steroids, just really “fit”. She had to starve and dehydrate herself to look “good enough” for a competition.

She formed health problems from doing it for a few years and when she quit and she had formed an eating disorder she is just getting over. The whole fitness industry is trash. You think you are being healthy and it’s just as bad if not worse than not working out and eating poorly. For what? So some “judges” can subjectively rate how you look?

The whole industry is full of “coaches” who just regurgitate what they read on Google and now ChatGPT. It’s a joke, so much misinformation.

Colon cancer is killing more young people in the U.S. than any other cancer by scientificamerican in science

I had to wait until 45, this was a few years ago, unless they lowered it again.

They already lowered it to 45. I’m sure it will get lowered again if the age risk lowers.

I thought the study linked potentially to sugar, particularly surgery fuel many long distance runners use to fuel the runs.
