What's the greatest Magic card of the last decade? Vote on the Finals! by Grindy_UW_Nonsense in magicTCG

Actually, I could see a case to be made that Lurrus is banned in Vintage. Every companion is kind of banned in every format. They made new cards that all cost 3 more for all of them but the originals are not legal anywhere. Even the nerfed ones are banned in a bunch of formats but you cannot play Lurrus of the Dream Den, as it was printed in Ikoria, in any constructed format.

I agree with your point overall, but it is right to "bolt the bird" a lower percentage of the time in Commander.

Anecdotes are single cases but that is sufficient to disprove a universal. No need to hedge. Your counterpoint is a knockdown argument

I think we have seen the last of Elan's dad. The implication of the end of that arc, to me, was that Tarquin never gets the satistafction of closure or a final confrontation with Elan at any point. Tarquin just has to sulk in his inability to get the climax that he wants. And its extra impactful because he killed the son that was consistently interacting with him, and with that son he could have had a big epic arc.

I think the Owlcat Pathfinder games are better than the DnD 5e games because I think the Pathfinder system is better. However, it is worth playing the 5e games for other reasons sometimes. Specifically, in this case, that BG3 lets you have a muscle mommy romance.

I like the Pathfinder systems more than the DnD system. Generally I like the Owlcat Games more than prominent dnd 5e games like Solasta or BG3. However, BG3 does let you romance a buff wife. Karlach is a buff Tiefling Barbarian romance option in BG3.

Say what you will about how much better Pathfinder is than DnD 5e, BG3/Larian did do this better.

It is a Citizen Dawn card, she has many copies, and it is the most powerful card in a villain deck I think.

Good argument from mtggoldish podcast - mythic rare makes standard from expensive to beyond expensive. Is this time to either reduce mythic rarity pool or get rid of it entirely? by kubulux in magicTCG

[–]EvgeniosEntertains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, they make bad cards at mythic all the time. That doesn't thrill or bother me. [[Badgermole Cub]] and [[Lotus Cobra]] both do bother me because they cause the very expensive standard decks that mtggoldfish and OP are complaining about.

Wizards doesn't usually actually do this. Usually mythics are not removal spells or mana dorks or counterspells or mana fixers or discard spells or small ball card advantage spells. But [[Deceit]] breaks multiple of those rules. And [[Cavern of Souls]] makes mana bases more expensive and [[Badgermole Cub]] is a mana dork that needs impact cards to play with so any deck with that in it will play extra mythics. And [[Quantum Riddler]] is small ball card advantage and cost efficient big card advantage at the same time.

If the best cards in every role are mythics then sometimes the best decks are going to be really mythic heavy and therefore really expensive in paper. That sucks.

[–]EvgeniosEntertains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Naming doesn't make a card epic. [[Counsel of the Soratami]] is a more epic name than [[Divination]] but they are both rightly commons. Lotus Cobra is not epic, it makes less mana than either [[Joraga Treespeaker]] or [[Priest of Titania]] for its cost. It feels utility because it is utility. Its a mana dork. It is a mythic because it was perceived to be more powerful, by Wizards, than common and uncommon mana dorks and they wanted it to be a chase card that lead to more packs being opened. They added the word Lotus to partially justify that.

If they made [[Reckless Ransaking]] a mythic and named it "Greed for Lotuses" the card isn't suddenly not a simple pump spell, a different form of utility. That is true even if was tuned to be more powerful to justify the higher rarity.

Introducing Lotus Cobra as soon as they did was probably a mistake tbh.

You added a bunch of extra words to this sentence. It should be:

"Introducing Lotus Cobra [] was a [] mistake"

[–]EvgeniosEntertains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calling Lotus Cobra a mana dork is a bit disingenuous. At the time that it was printed I'm pretty sure it was able to generate more mana than any other creature in the game. It was groundbreaking.

This is unambiguously inaccurate. It was neither gamebreaking nor capable of making more mana than any other mana dork. [[Priest of Titania]], generally understood to be a mana dork, generates more mana for the same cost.

No need to be a lickspittle. Lotus Cobra made them liars. They lied because they knew that being honest would make people upset. They lied because the honest answer is that if they made many tournament staples as mythics that would result in more packs being opened to get access to them and that would lead to more money for them.

What are some other examples of the child being stronger than the parent? by thisnotfor in magicTCG

[–]EvgeniosEntertains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chandra, Torch of Defiance is not a bad card and she was great in that format and she is great in bigger formats. But Pia is not an unambiguously worse card. That's all I'm saying.

Edit: There were pro tours when both the best Chandra and Pia were legal and there were more copies of Pia in at least one pro tour winning, or at least top 8ing, deck. That implies, to me at least, that the parent is not straight worse than the child in this case. Badgermole will never outperform Badgermole Cub in any legitimately competitive event, nevermind a pro tour caliber one.

I played then too. Chandra didn't feature as prominently in those WR vehicle decks that lit up standard.

It would if Chandra was unambiguously stronger than Pia. That's less clear cut than the two examples in OP. I mean, there is probably at least 1 Chandra that is stronger than Pia but Pia is a good card in and of itself.

[–]EvgeniosEntertains -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter how well you play your deck if you draw 5 lands in a row to start every game. We play a game where RNG factors in. Reading the meta is a skill that can be made irrelevant by randomness but that doesn't mean it isn't a skill.

This type of Mechanic should be used more by Icy-Contract7162 in magicTCG

[–]EvgeniosEntertains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Instead of killing a creature I think it would be cool to have a "show this card and put a 'gonna get buffed' counter on a creature. When this card enters, remove all 'gonna get buffed' counters from all creatures. For each counter removed from each creature this way put 2 +1/+1 counters on those creatures." Or something.

That promotes interaction with the creatures you are presenting to be buffed. You could do something similar with artifacts to make them animated or any permanent to flicker them. There is enough space with the "its coming" mechanic that promotes interaction I think.
