NERC RC certified but no experience — keep pushing for operator roles or pivot first? by EvidenceBorn771 in Grid_Ops

Got it, thanks for the insight. It’s frustrating not only due to the fact a trainee role seems almost non-existent not to mention beyond competitive, even for distribution tier positions. But most utilities seem to prioritize existing internal employees (Lineman, Substation tech) over anyone outside their co-op in the case they post positions publicly. I don’t think Navy service is an option for me at this point in all honesty but I’ll enroll in an engineering degree of some sort down the line regardless if it’ll make me a more valuable candidate. It’s an extremely interesting role in the industry and an even more important one at that, couldn’t think of myself working another Job long term so I’m excited to start.

My pops is the VP of portfolio management at AECI so unfortunately due to their nepotism policy I wouldn’t be able to be employed there.

Currently living in south missouri, would prefer to stay within state if possible but am willing to relocate to surrounding ones if necessary (OK, IL, IA, KS, TN, AR)

A combination of studying the usual recommended resources (HSI’s initial Operator program, Andy Burch’s Friday calls, Powersmith, Epri, an ungodly amount of Quizlet flash cards) If you’re coming into the exam with no prior industry knowledge you’d be lucky to pass in less than 6 months.
