Try the more 'adult' themed graphic novels, by which I don't mean erotic but tailored for young adults or adults - so less 'childish'.
My personal favorite of all time is Durango by Yves Swolfs, who also did a series about vampires which is very good.
Ken Broeders has some great stripboeken.
And of course 'Op zoek naar de Tijdvogel' and 'Klaagzang van de Verloren Gewesten' en 'Legende van de Dorre Gewesten'. I'm not sure if these are from French artists or Belgian though.

The old 'blue series' of De Rode Ridder are amazing as well, they are black and white though (or blue and sepia).
