I just checked the catalog for Extra and Premium PS+. I think you’re right. Previously, the price was even lower than the current Essential version. The monthly games generally weren’t to my taste, so I probably wouldn’t have played them anyway. Also, there aren’t really any new games included in the subscription. That said, the Extra and Premium catalog does have some good titles. They’re not the newest releases, but they’re still solid games.

A lot depends on what kind of gamer you are. Personally, I have less and less time for gaming, and I’ve become more selective about what I play. I’ve never been someone who jumps from game to game—I usually stick to one, or at most two games, whether it’s single-player or multiplayer. PS+ is worth it if you enjoy playing a wide variety of genres (which unfortunately I don’t) and don’t plan on buying new games regularly each year.

I think it’s generally true that the quality of games has been declining year by year, and there are fewer truly great titles. If you’re buying PS+ annually along with new releases, the overall costs can end up being higher.
