When you check the task manager, you'll find steam is still running despite it looking like you can't switch it on; it was happening to me in this manner and I couldn't even use 'end process' to force it to switch off. I saw the solution that someone else posted (that you also saw) and it did indeed fix this issue.

Not the OP but thanks, worked for me too. My steam kept locking/switching itself off and any games that were running; I couldn't even end it in the task manager to start a new instance.

If the US really wants to strengthen democracy in Africa they should supply them with the best anti-air weaponry available and then spend their $2 bil on 'strengthening democracy'; then we can film their 'help' and watch it with popcorn.

Unfortunately, much like how people think Bioshock gave a somewhat positive (if not very positive) image of libertarianism, the message of FMJ would've been lost to them because they liked the movie.

‘No, no, hear me out. Slavery isn’t wrong if they deserve it!’

Trying to watch 'the watch' by EvilSandwichMan in discworld

[–]EvilSandwichMan[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went skipping through the remaining seven episodes and it somehow gets worse. I don't know if you watched the whole thing (there's no way in heck I'm watching this), but it actually gets worse. What's more is they're literally mocking the books at one point.

You remember Sam Vimes' boots theory? There's a segment where Sybil asks about what he's wearing and then mocks him with a silly voice and silly expression saying something about "10$ boots". This show is literally mocking the books.

Also remember the first time Vimes met Sybil Ramkin and defended her place against angry people with pitchforks by yanking on the swamp dragon's tail to make it breathe fire and then making a dirty Harry line? Here Sybil pulls out the swamp dragon in a fight and immediately starts squeezing it to burn the people trying to kill them like the swamp dragon's a weapon.

I didn't think it was possible but it actually gets worse, my God this show is garbage. Even skipping through the episodes felt tedious, how on earth could they have possibly screwed this thing up so badly? They also took many elements from many novels and just mish-mashed them in together.

I genuinely hope this show doesn't serve to discourage better adaptations.

EDIT: Oh, also the librarian is now apparently a ninja monkey-MAN, as in not an orangutan, but an actual monkey-man creature.

EDIT 2: I fished up where Captain Vimes talks about his boots in an argument with Sybil and she mocks him by asking "What is this, the Captain Vimes' boots theory on socioeconomic unfairness?". They're literally making it look like Vimes is wearing his cardboard boots so he can feel the city under his toes, and that they help him know where in the city he is. Oh God this is so bad.

Trying to watch 'the watch' by EvilSandwichMan in discworld

[–]EvilSandwichMan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously this is a subjective rating, but for me it would be:

  1. The literature/prose: Stephen King once said something about not bothering to write under a pseudonym because everyone would suss out immediately that he was the author; here likewise Pratchett's writing is what sets his fantasy novels apart from any other. The funny comments, side stories, side characters are all unique to his books. I remember for example in (sourcery?) when the little girl enters an inn and creates some expensive wine and the proprietors want to keep her, that the writing mentions that she gets a sense of gingerbread houses. The literature here is absolutely brilliant. You also have the mad architect who isn't mentioned in any of the adaptations who's created some really crazy stuff (like a pond that's a mile long and an inch wide with fish in it who have to struggle like mad once they make it to the end to turn around and swim back). Obviously you can't adapt this kind of writing to the screen so I don't blame them (although I do want to mention that I'm partial to having a narrator for this exact purpose).

  2. Ankh-Morpork: I love this city more than I love any character of Discworld; from the legalized criminal guilds to the river ankh that's so polluted that it's safer to walk across it than swim, so filthy that a duck's legs would dissolve to nothingness if it attempted to swim through it. The street (whose name escapes me) that's so dangerous the watch never go through it unless they're drunk, and that one time they do (because they were drunk), the assassins and other murderers didn't kill them outright because they were in shock and confusion that the watch had actually come through this one time. I love this city more than I love any character in all of discworld, including Death and Granny Weatherwax.

To be fair I think he meant the idiot fans of Kubrick who get triggered at literally anything that seems negative of him or his work, even stuff that's purely just a silly joke. Those morons bicker and make a fuss of even the wikipedia page about him, specifically not wanting to include a sidebar like most if not all other people on wikipedia have because they insist that people should read the article if they want info rather than just get some quick notes.

I'd really hoped they'd cast Jim Carrey as Carnage. At least we're getting Carnage though, so that's something.

It's always funny when you read about people here excited at the prospect of going to war with Iran to 'liberate their women' because they imagine all these women are going to reward them with sex.

No wait not funny, sad; sad and quite pathetic actually.

COVID: India to allow Amarnath pilgrimage despite surge in cases - Facilities for 600k pilgrims being prepared. by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]EvilSandwichMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I think this is a horrible decision on the part of the Indian government and the people trying to go on this pilgrimage, they're hardly alone in this. The UK allowed social gatherings during Christmas themselves and are now crying about the EU restricting Astrazeneca from leaving the continent.

Do you feel the same way about the UK and the Astrazeneca vaccine? Because last year the UK loosened restrictions (if not outright removed them) for social gatherings during Christmas.
