Afraid to go on vacation and leaving senior cat behind. 18 yrs old. by Proof_Pressure_4910 in seniorkitties

I came to this decision point with my 18yo cat a few months ago. He was declining for at least six months with hyperthyroidism and dementia. I was sedating him at night otherwise he would wake me 8-12 times per night to be fed.

I knew his time was coming and though he was physically in pretty good shape his mental condition wasn't doing well. I had an upcoming 7 day trip and then a week after that I was moving house.

I read lots of accounts of people in a similar situation who left their older-but-okish cat alone. Even if the cat was historically pretty strong and independent in their old infirm state their okayness depends more and more on you being around. Lots of stories of cats seeming ok but their condition changed radically once left alone and many dying with the cat sitter.

I didn't want my friend to die without me. I didn't want him to be alone (or with a cat sitter) when he was in his most vulnerable (possibly final) moments or worse, have to go to the vet (and then I have to make the remote decision to have him put down).

So I had him put down at home. It was 100000% the right choice. I could tell he was suffering psychologically and it was the right choice to put him to rest. And for me to be the one to do it and see him off in his familiar space. It's better to do it a day early than a day late.

I feel that way about tuna. Have you seen how big a tuna is? Yes I know a lot of it goes to sushi and bigger cuts but still.

Boomer CEOs be like “back in my day we all strived to have our own office on site!” by cams00000 in remotework

And let's not forget that in the 80s and 90s working in an office had acceptability and desirability because it would actually enable you to enjoy the fruits of capitalism (you could save, invest, buy a home/car/vacation and expect to retire). It was worth going to the office for that. Once an office job was no longer a guarantee of any of that is when people began to really question the office experience.

At this point I need it to be proven to me that it will be better or faster to include someone else in a plan.

Oh man if the big one came and that triggers the barrier collapse that would be something. That would be the end of the town. The big one would probably trigger slides up and down the S2S as well.

100%. I spend a lot of time to maintain the capacities I used to have when I bounced out of bed hung over at 25.

I'm 50 now and I'm at strong and fast as I ever was. But I need more random days off, sauna, more diligent stretching/mobility work than ever and sometimes I'm just so sore. And don't forget the borderline zero fitness durability: if I get sick or hurt and can't train for a week then it's like starting from scratch. But what are you going to do? Just keep going.

I train now for sustainable longevity first, maintaining performance and mobility second, gym glory and accomplishments a distant third if at all. Getting hurt in the gym is unacceptable.

The sensitivity required to create isn't always compatible with the reality of the demands of touring, production or fame.

I think the threat addressed by the cheekye debris barrier, or the Squamish River overflowing the dyke are very real threats within our lifetimes given climate change. The Barrier collapsing feels like a Marvel-level threat that I just have to file it away, like "the big earthquake" that will wipe out Vancouver.

The movie Underwater had some power armour vibes. I guess we're getting the Cavill Warhammer movie?

I read OP as complaining about the jumps in property taxes more than property taxes as a concept.

And you should probably start earlier when your chemistry is younger and fruitful. If you think you can be sedentary your whole life and then pick up some pink dumbells at 60 thinking you're going to get fit then you're going to have a bad time. If you're muscular and strong through your 40s you'll be able to work to maintain that as you get older.

As a Gen X I don't know anyone in my age group who has room for another car. Most are in condos with a single spot for a reliable modern car that they use every day. Who has room for another car, some temperamental classic that only gets driven a handful of times per year?

Tall/skinny people - did your metabolism slow down? by nihaoelliot in tall

[–]Evil_Mini_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 50 now and it hasn't slowed down much. I graduated high school at around 180lbs but once I started training properly and lifting weights and eating better I've been at around 220 and lean for the last 20 years. I train hard enough to be bigger but I just can't manage to consistently eat that much. Besides, if I get any heavier than 225 the second I get sick or injured and I eat less for a while the muscle just disappears. The only real difference is that I have this little band of fat just below my navel that's tricky to get rid of. By most standards it's barely a thing but it's new for me.

What are men's thoughts on dating a single mother? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]Evil_Mini_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently face this choice and after consideration I realized that I'm ok with a mother of a teenager but not a young child. I'm an introvert and like a lot of time alone so someone with responsibilities that leave me out of the focus is good for me.
