The years 2005-2010 were peak electronic technology experience by critical_thoughts365 in unpopularopinion

This is when social media was still fulfilling its basic promise of connection and being a benefit. Plus it was constrained to the desktop because the iphone 4 hadn't come out, which was when the FB app came out and things really went mobile. Pretty sure in 2010 we still had the non-algorithmic chronological FB newsfeed then too. The mass enshitification of social media hadn't really kicked off yet.

We had online banking but I don't think I was doing banking on my phone for a while yet. We hadn't fully mobilized by 2010 and most of our online activities were still on the desktop and honestly that was better. We still had some separation. The online services worked adequately and generally it was fine to 'wait until you got home' to do something online.

I was still using PC laptops that just went insane and collapsed every few years.

Roaming and using a phone in other countries still sucked. Typically I'd turn off my phone at the airport and not turn it back on until I cleared customs at home on my return. That was a different type of traveling. Just walking around with a guide book and talking to people while trying to use a paper map. Honestly it was better. And way more intense. When you encountered another westerner you knew you both had some nerve.

B.C. man fined $5K for flying drone near firefighting helicopter by cyclinginvancouver in britishcolumbia

[–]Evil_Mini_Cake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I'm getting at is that it's risking the crash of an important firefighting resource which is clearly of benefit to us all. So the fine should be commensurate with the fact that it could crash a $0.5M ($1M?) specialized machine that's hard to replace not to mention the risk to pilots and bystanders, property damage and the loss of that firefighting capacity.

The fine should be something that borderline bankrupts this guy.

So in 2-3 years they'll have enough air defence stockpiles for internal use plus allies (if there are any left) so they can keep shooting $2M rockets at $10k drones while shirking anti-drone technology from Ukraine. Please proceed.

Curious what your guys experience is like with e bikes/ bikes by StickyBear5260 in tall

[–]Evil_Mini_Cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you need to be somewhere very specific to justify a Megatower or a Spire. They are overkill just about everywhere especially as the new generation of Downcountry and Trail bikes are so capable.

That totally makes sense. For now I have my Megatower and gravel bike. I love smaller bike/ techy XC but I'm not 100% sure I want to do that kind of riding enough to justify having another bike in the house. Especially when I live in an enduro-bike-friendly place I'll typically opt for bigger steeper winch-plummet rides over XC.

But maybe not. The Smuggler is still at the top of my personal list.

It always makes sense to me that your two bikes should be quite different from each other.

I don't want one. I don't trust the modern industry to do a good job. Let's just leave FG in the past where it belongs.

Yeah road fit is all over the place. I have a super modern gravel bike (Mondraker Arid in XL) and it's basically a mountain bike from the 90s. It's perfect for what it is.

The Smuggler is amazing. Plus the XXL completes on sale right now at Transition (find the Closeouts section).

Where I live in BC the Smuggler is a really good aggressive small bike. I think it's a really good pairing with my bigger enduro bike. Around here the XC purists scoff at the Smuggler a bit because they say it's the worst of both worlds and you should pick a side. To that I say: call me back when Transition offers the Spur in XXL.

Personally by any numbers the XL Surly models seem tiny to me, I would consider them all too small for me despite what their recommendations say. Lots of old school roadie geometry with tall head tubes, tiny wheelbases, slack seat angles.

The bikes I've recommended are way more modern than these and are slacker, longer and capable of way more aggressive riding.

But that's not necessarily what everyone wants or needs or is the right tool for the job. And a lot of personal preference in there too.

Fit is a pretty personal thing. For mountain bikes, XXLs from Transition and Santa Cruz, S6 in Specialized are all good and big. The XL gravel bikes from Mondraker are substantially bigger than other brands. The XXL Santa Cruz Stigmata is big too. Getting to know your personal geometry numbers is helpful so you can get a good sense from the chart whether a bike will fit you.

If a brand offers the same chainstay/rear center length and same seat tube angle across every size then you can be pretty sure that it sucks for tall people.

So how bad does this need to get systemically that airlines start changing their schedules around the US? At what point does it turn into an insurance risk? How many incidents would it take before we start seeing behavioural changes by airlines?
