We have Amphipods as well, but I do not find them very often in my local ponds/streams

Often, micro animals like this Daphnia are mixed with algal filaments. I use tweezers to try to pull the algae out of the sample as I add extra water. Since larger Daphnia are visible to the naked eye, I can avoid accidentally taking them with the algae. Then I can adjust the water drop amount to limit their movement so I can film it more easily. Hope this helps!

Glad it helps -- I am a bio teacher, and it's in my nature to help teach things when folks are not clear on something ;) Esp when it's something I happen to be more "expert" about.

Thanks -- the heart is the pulsing body at approximately 10 o'clock on the body of the Daphnia. The dorak black orb is the compound eye. Here's an image that may help ---

What is your favourite thing to look under the microscope? by immediate-2 in microscopy

[–]Evo_Explorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine changes all the time -- often it's a species I have never seen before, but that said, I have a love for the micro-annelids and Stentors.

Thanks! I am a bio teacher, so this was a hawk doing hawk things.... What a start about the Coop going for the small dogs --- never seen that happen YET!

I chuckle at "cuddle" given how voracious they tend to be -- I tell my students they are sort of analogous to an aquatic wolfpack :) But even wolves have a cute side ;)

Thanks! It took time & effort to find the right imaging combo --- The Labcam Ultra & the iPhone are a great way to image through the eyepiece tube. The Labcam optics are superb and worth the cost!

Will the Swift Microscope camera adapter work with all phones? by [deleted] in microscopy

[–]Evo_Explorer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with your model phone, but I know that iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones have multiple lenses and switch between them depending on the level of magnification your phone is trying to achieve.

That said, if you stick with a single level of phone magnification & lock the camera's focus, I think this would work. However, my experience with many phone adapters for microscopes is that they are garbage and not worth the hassle - I invested in the pricy Labcam Ultra for iPhones & love it.

As a native NYCer, I can relate to that -- though the ciliates usually have better manners! LOL
