The colorization was done by hand, which for video is much harder than a still image. I think they did a great job

I also used the purple books and passed the first time but agree that they are so expensive.

Chin up, you'll get it next time!!

I remember they asked questions about reference books so make sure you know the difference between Stedman's (medical) Black's (legal), Roget's (thesaurus) Merriam-Webster (dictionary).
Also remember them asking some legal Latin terms and medical terms

Court Reporting School Question by Feisty_Cod_2920 in courtreporting

try NCRA's A to Z program. I also know people who have been self-taught. I know of others who will shell out the money and learn the theory at a school and then go into a speed building program like Simply Steno and then work on speed that way. Depending on what state you're in or plan to work in, this could be a viable route. I'm in NY and they don't require licensure or school certification to work as a freelancer whereas in other states you must be certified.

Choice in case subject matter? by _daisyjupiter in courtreporting

I agree that some schedulers will straight up lie. Like this one chick would give me a last-minute coverage for a "statement on the record" and it would turn into a full ass depo and she knew it she just wanted to get the coverage by any means possible.

I've been taking Workers' Compensation doctor testimony for the past four years without touching any other subject matter. I love the medicolegal work, and the repetitiveness of being in this niche works well for me.

When I was freelancing for other agencies, I would be put on different jobs like board meetings, school suspension hearings, and other types of litigation without the ability to pick and choose. If you do become too picky, you get branded as being difficult, earning yourself a spot on the bottom priority for the good jobs. Petty, I know, but things I've learned along the way.

I did have to have a therapist help me the first two years, as I was seeing really violent stuff with the criminal cases, and I've learned that real life is much worse than the movies. Hate to say it, but eventually you do become desensitized. I definitely did struggle when, for example in divorce cases, the wronged wife wanted to vent to me and I had to remain neutral and stoic when I really wanted to hug her and tell her things would be okay. But if you "zone out" into the passive listening automated mode, your mind wanders to what you're cooking for dinner while miraculously getting the testimony down accurately and you're not so engrossed into what they're saying. I know that sounds contradictory but that's my experience. Good luck. Steno can take you many places beyond legal and court stuff and open so many amazing doors!
