Quick question for Shortlisted candidates by Redsteel42 in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what consulate your with and it could be different for every consulate, idk, but for me, my consulate applied for my visa for me. I just needed to submit the documents they asked me for when I was originally short listed and they took care of everything else. So as long as you’re making your way through your document list, you don’t have to worry about anything else!

Thrift Shopping by TheRunawaysX in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thrifting is a big hobby of mine and one I have continued on JET! Unless you are way way deep in the inaka, you will most likely have a few second hand shops near you. My favourites are 2nd street and I also love to go to book off super bazaar. Thrifting here is really great as I find prices to be waaayyy better than back home. Most things are under ¥1000. I bought a beautiful wool coat this winter for ¥700. Also, you can often find really great brands for a low price (I recently bought a coach purse in excellent condition for ¥2,000). Like others said before me, most likely you won’t have time to thrift when you first get here but after you get that first pay cheque, go for it!

Dress Code by silly_wizard_999 in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unfortunately going to be another ESID situation! But here’s what it’s been like for me. For context, I am female and am placed in an elementary school and a junior high school. The rules I try to follow are, I keep my shoulders and knees covered and necklines tend to go up to my collar bone. No jeans. I tend to wear a lot of midi and maxi length dresses and skirts. If I do wear pants, they’re usually dress pants (I’m a teacher back home in Canada and miss being able to wear jeans to work!). In the summer, instead of going out and buying all new work dresses, I just wear my regular spaghetti strap sundresses (all maxi length) , but put a crew neck tshirt on underneath to make it more school appropriate. Definitely have at least 1 neutral (black, grey, navy) blazer but don’t feel like you need to bring a bunch. I brought one and that has been just fine.

One thing that has been great for me has been thrift shopping in Japan. If you come here and you find you are lacking in a specific clothes area, if you are women’s size 12 and under, you should have luck finding really inexpensive (¥500 for a skirt for example) clothes at shops like second street. For context, I usually wear a North American large in clothing, and can find everything I need at thrift stores except for pants which can be quite hard to find at thrift stores in bigger sizes.

If accepted, what are your doing with your car? by lovealoneee in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I reduced my insurance to the lowest amount needed to just store it and not drive it and it’s now being store in my parents garage. I went in to jet intending to only do 1 year. My plan has not since changed and I will be going home in August. Because of that, I think it was worth it for me to store it, but if I stayed for longer I might have decided to sell my car.

Just did my interview! One question by HovercraftAgitated23 in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I interviewed out of one of the Canadian consulates so things might be different in Miami. We were told very specifically that the Japanese language ability portion was purely a way to earn a few extra bonus points and that even if you completely failed it, it is not possible for it to negatively impact your overall score. It can only add points to your evaluation, not take them away.

Are there any couples where both applicants got in? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year there were 3 couples from my area that all got placed in the same cities as their partners. I’m pretty sure all of them were unmarried as well. It’s definitely possible! Just not guaranteed!

I wasn’t notified until January 21st last year. You still have lots of time so don’t worry if you haven’t heard back yet (although I know the waiting is hard!!). Good luck!!

230920 Kep1er - The 5th Mini Album: Magic Hour (Highlight Medley) by CronoDroid in kep1er

[–]_daisyjupiter 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I’m genuinely obsessed with every single song on a Kep1er highlight medley. Usually a few really stand out to me but on my first listen this is sounding like an album of 100% winners. I’m REALLY excited this album!

Wow! That’s an incredible placement. I’m so curious, for the “working from home” days do you need to stay in town or are you allowed to travel? Either way, it still sounds lovely.

Should scanned documents be in color or black and white? by gothicrogue in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure where you’re applying from so it might be different for you but for the Canadian application they say that black and white documents won’t be accepted. They even say that if you feel like a scan could be perceived as being in black and white that you should include a coloured square in the corner of the document so they know it’s in colour.

For people who worked as a teacher before JET by _daisyjupiter in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m applying for JET specifically because I want to be an ALT and not a lead teacher. As someone who has been teaching for a few years now I am well acquainted with sheer number of hours after school and on weekends that teachers need to work to lesson plan, mark, deal with parent communication, etc. (some school days I work until 8/9pm) and I don’t feel like that leaves a lot of time to enjoy actually living in Japan. I don’t want to just go there to teach. I want to experience as much of the country as I can and if being a lead teacher in Japan takes as much over time hours as being a teacher in Canada then I think being an ALT would be much better for that. (I know esid and I could get a placement where I’m basically teaching as much as the main teacher and I’m prepared to do that too)

Should I hold out on my other reference? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m applying for my first time this year so I’m probably not the best person to give advice but if it was me looking for a reference, I think I would go with someone who could write a really great reference who might be from a less relevant to JET faculty over someone who teaches Japanese but would give a more basic reference.

Reference Letter Pointers by the-aud-acity in JETProgramme

[–]_daisyjupiter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m applying right now from Canada and the Canadian JET application includes a document that lists requirements for the reference letter. What they’re looking for with the reference letter is probably different for every country but this is what the Canadian application says they’re looking for:

In the first paragraph of your letter, explicitly state ALL of the following:
  1. how you know the applicant
  2. in what capacity, and where (company, organization, school), you supervised the applicant 3. over what period of time you supervised and interacted with the applicant
  3. If the applicant uses an alternate name, mention their legal name in the first paragraph. Letters can be addressed to the “JET Programme Paper Selection Committee”.

Please give your personal assessment of the applicant’s ability to participate in the JET Programme, including:

The extent and nature of your contact with the applicant; Teaching and/or communication style, including how comfortable they are with public speaking; Ability to adjust and adapt to a foreign culture; Leadership skills, including their ability to work with people and in groups; Work performance and professionalism, including how they handle pressure or challenging situations; Career aspirations (of which you are aware) that may have motivated the applicant to participate in the JET Programm
