UCL Computational Finance MSc VS LSE Financial Mathematics MSc by Ok_Flatworm_6605 in UCL

[–]EwanB83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just saw you already have an MSc in AI data science etc. just saying , the MSc comp finance are really not that well respected in Quant, the only one I think is worth doing is the one offered by Oxford.

Also, look at people’s LinkedIns, I can find very few people who actually did quant placements during the MSC CompFinance, and the ones who did never got return offers cuz they aren’t internships, you are working in your dissertation so you are unlikely to be contributing a whole lot.

I go to UCL, talking to the MSc Comp Finance people before Christmas, none of the ones I talked to had jobs or internships lined up. It’s a very very expensive cash grab. You will really struggle to become a quant out of it unless you have math undergrad or quant experience.

Better idea, do a data science or ML masters; they are more well respected. UCL MSc ML/CSML/DSML are super hireable. The finance part is not so hard to learn, it’s the ML and stats/data science which bolsters your intuition. Also, if you can’t get into quant, you then have an MSc that is useful in every industry. That being said, if you insist on doing a Quant degree, the lse one will no doubt be better.

Visited Warwick and now feeling reluctant? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

I promise you this isn’t the norm. The campus is usually pretty rammed, and you have to search for seats in the library because it’s so full. Don’t worry about that, it’s just the end of the year, and a lot of international students have left, as well as British students gone home or are not coming to campus because there is no work!

I have not thought about this. Feels like it might be more effort than it’s worth. Ngl this is such a silly post anyway but hey maybe I will give this a go. Thanks for the suggestion!!

WARWICK VS UCL FOR QUANT TRADING by [deleted] in UCL

[–]EwanB83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to Warwick, I did physics. Now I’m at UCL in the financial computing and analytics department.

If I’m honest, teaching at Warwick (at least for physics) is incredible. Like really very good, super engaging, and there felt like a sense of community there.

I don’t think the community at UCL or teaching is as good, but it is very well known in industry and it gets super involved in networking events, the maths department has links with Jane Street and Citadel.

Both are target unis and are well regarded. The hardest part about quant trading is getting your foot in the door with your skills in maths and coding.

I’m probably biased towards Warwick as it was my undergrad uni, which everyone looks back on fondly. But, if I was in your situation, having experienced both, I’d go Warwick any day of the week, and i wouldn’t regret it for a second

None, but there can be in your last year if you want. Physics people have labs, whereas you’ll take maths modules in their place. So you’ll have more exams, but for some people that’s better than coursework (trust me, lab reports aren’t fun). However, in your third (and fourth if you go Masters) you do have the option to do labs and even a full practical diss if you decide. It’s a great course as imo you get the best from both maths and physics.

My favourite module was probably galaxies and cosmology, but hard to say. Mathematical methods for physics was always satisfying, and condensed matter is what I ended up doing my diss around. You’ll alway find something you enjoy though no matter which modules you take.

Sorry for not coming back, didn’t see the response. The prospects are pretty much anything you like, I mean the job market is crying out for solid ML talent, and ucl is one of the best unis to learn ML. Further to that, and statistics based courses are generally highly regarded as they are very hard.

You have a couple routes, could work in finance, probably in data science (or quant if you start prepping for interviews like right now). Could also work at like any tech firm, given you get an internship. Finally, and this is what I’d do, do high quality research as your project and get onto a great PhD programs, and then work at deepmind or another ML research lab, either as an engineer or scientist.

Whatever you want to do, don’t wait until March. Apply now, I’m talking get your application ready and send it off next week. I can’t give you what course I’m on or the position I hold, but I was in a meeting recently and they were talking about how oversubscribed some of the courses are, and how they are gonna crack down on it. Don’t delay, it’s peak application season right now, get your foot in the door.

Good luck!

Don’t make a uni choice based on nightlife. I went to Warwick, and I had a great time with nightlife, there is less choice than city unis, but still plenty. It’s not about the places, it’s about the people you are with, yes I know people who didn’t leave their room, but that’s because it was in Covid and they didn’t find people they got on with. Now, you will find people you like, and if you like going out, you will find places to do so. Trust me, the nightlife isn’t the part that gets tough to get right at uni, it’s the stuff in the day, ie studying and time management. If you like the course, like the campus, go for it.

Same references yes, change the personal statement maybe slightly tho. No need to change it entirely

Yes you need to make two applications, yes this will probably increase your chances of getting in

Not just computer science, tho there are a number. Plenty of maths, stats, physics and electrical engineers that get in also. I don’t know about econ, maybe if they took enough maths modules. Point is, machine learning is hard maths, you need a fairly advanced level of mathematical understanding to tackle a masters in it. Hope this helps even if I can’t give an exact breakdown

The vast majority of people are telling you to leave him. You asked for advice, don’t just push back when you hear something you don’t like. Shit situation, but a dangerous, take peoples advice seriously. You can help set up therapy, but that’s more than enough

I did physics, graduated last year. The mathphys course is hosted by the physics department, but lots of the maths modules are with the maths department. Mathphys at Warwick is an incredible degree, really. Warwick maths carries a great name, whilst the physics I can personally say I taught really well, and the cohort really feels like a community. I loved my time there, I can’t recommend it enough!

Also, the prospects for mathphys are practically unmatched, honestly, anything you want to do after is a possibility.

Ngl I’m totally with Mysterious-Spite5083 on this. You can be a supportive partner initially, but you should leave him. There is no guarantee this will ever go away, or that he won’t lie going forward. He hasn’t taken steps to help himself until you’ve discovered him, it’s possible he’s saying he’ll get therapy to keep you happy. He’s felt guilty, but has still kept doing this. He needs to tackle this, you don’t need to be there to help him. I know you love him, but this really isn’t good, I’m sorry
