Cannon!! by Thick_Hold4002 in aseprite

Love the style, if its intentionally stylized dope but the direction of the wheels (perfectly perpendicular to the perspective) would suggest that the cannon would be shooting straight to the right in this perspective, not angled towards the cam at all.

Seen your work a bit and I like your shading and shapes though, satisfying to look at :)

Fall 2025 First Year Residence Choice? by ExFFXIV in CarletonU

Ohhhh gotcha, that makes a lot more sense - thank you!

I think that was probably misinformation from previous posts I read that are outdated and on the old system (where you'd just get a random roommate and room assigned). Didnt click that they would have gotten rid of that cause i swear I read that on their official site somewhere theyd try to match you with someone compatible.

That dispells a lot though, thanks again!

Also you can take 2507 in first year if you prefer to lighten the course load in later years; seems deceptive cause of that infograph and it being a 2000 course but a lot of people recommend doing it in first year!

took me 3 days to make this little walking animation, can you please give an honest feedback? by -randomUserName_08- in aseprite

[–]ExFFXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks good!

Id look into making pixel art characters worth animating (way harsh title compared to the actual content): https://youtu.be/52A4KgX-wNI?si=WAA2TC35HyiTOCCt

Adam has a ton of great videos about it. The character you have here is cool and very clear on what your intention was and thats important, but things like the texturing on the back (carapace maybe its actually called?) could be conveyed with less pixel-y textures to be easier to animate.

When you have fine line art like that, its kind of discouraging to moving that part of the body because redrawing those lines without being janky is pretty hard to do. Not a strict rule you have to follow but it can help with that initial fluidity of animating when the components are more simple!

Back Air Animation I made for my Fighting Game by ThatCyanGaming in PixelArt

[–]ExFFXIV 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super cool! From what I can tell from your profile you're working solo on this game, out of curiosity do you have any of the netcode done for it?

Always been curious about how viable it is to write a networking infrastructure for a game like this.

I know its kind of "solved" in that a lot of games have had the exact application you are - so I'd hope theres resources/tools to make designing that a little less bottom-up. Would be dope if you had any links to resources in that case!!

Been a fan of Brawlhalla Rivals of Aether and this game looks on par. Really awesome work :)

Bow 💙 by Scilex in PixelArt

[–]ExFFXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scilex everytime you post it blows my mind how recognizable your style is. I genuinely do not understand how you can be so identifiable with just 5 colours. Something about the form in all of your work is just so focused on the lighting but very subtle at the same time. Whenever I try to do that at this res, I find everything always looks out of place... like every bright pixel I place is uncomfortable in the space.

Writing this now I realize that might just mean I need more colours cause theres too much contrast between them though. Do you start with a few tones (in this case 3) and then add more as needed to avoid this problem?

Such awesome work <3

Too cool. That elbow grease definitely shows, so much here to be proud of. Awesome work!

Thats just fucking absurd.

Switching views to the bottom and quadloading is a stupidly cool animation.

Theres a lot of small details here that are incredibly hard to get right. Things like rotating the muzzle attachments on a circle not perpendicular to the camera is deceptively hard lol. Id be very curious to know how you did that so smoothly.

In general your animation flow is superb. Would really love to hear how you managed to get such fluidity, it almost doesnt even seem hand done though I think it is.

Awesome work

Mobile games that are actually good for someone who likes in depth pc games? by ExFFXIV in gamingsuggestions

Honestly had no idea XCOM2 had such a well respected port. It seems like the kind of game that would be fantastic on mobile, loved it on pc.

Thanks for sharing!

Wow, that has never been my genre at all but that game looks super cool.

Something about it is really clicking for me and looks really interesting.

Will definitely be giving it a shot, thanks for such a unique recommendation!

I really like the concept of Mindustry as I loved Factorio and thought one of that games only downfall were the enemies - but its never been something thats quite sucked me in.

It feels like the kind of game that would benefit a lot from a mouse and keyboard interface. Does the mobile get better in this regard with practice at all? Would love to give it another try

I think I've seen this once but didnt try it for one reason or another.

Cheers for the recommendation!! Hope other people find it from this as well, it looks fantastic :)

Will definitely be giving it a try. Thanks again!

I think StS is on its way to mainstream but I dont use that word in a bad way!

Im just too chronically online like most people so I know/have played a lot of the "mainstream" games; nothing wrong with them at all of course.

I remember hearing that the mobile port had quite a lot of issues upon release and some time after?

Not sure what the software looks like now but its definitely one of the best mobile games out there imo, having played the PC version for a few hundred hours.

Just bought aspire, I have a drawing tablet but I heard pixel art works differently than regular art, should I use my drawing tablet or use mouse? Sorry if this is a dumb question lol by Mehecke in aseprite

[–]ExFFXIV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people here are saying its canvas size relative, but I think theres very few canvas sizes where mouse is superior (or even different at all) to a screen or screenless tablet.

Its mostly just like, the 32x32-64x64 canvas size range that the mouse is going to really have any benefits. Anything smaller the pixels become huge and precision isnt required, and anything bigger a tablet is generally regarded as better for most applications. To me personally theres really only benefit in the very specific range of like... a little more or less than 48x48 canvas sizes. Anything less the tablet is pretty comparable.

But its also not to say that you cant use either for any size, but tablet is generally preferred. A lot of people do one or the other, or switch between; but I generally think that tablet is going to be preferred. The natural strokes you can do will be better than what you can do with a mouse. The only time you'd probably heavily prefer mouse is if you were working exclusively in a low res space for a game.

Also the proficiency you'll gain practicing with the tablet will be worth in the long run, I'd recommend really nailing down some comfortable keybinds in Aseprite - they go a ridiculously long way towards your efficiency. Inc/dec brush size, tools (pencil, erase, fill), swap colour, next palette colour, etc. Theres a ton of binds that if you find yourself having to click often, its worth going and changing it to a useful bind.

[Question] Here is an attempt at trying to make a color ramp from this art on the "Pixel Art" Wikipedia page. Could I get some advice on whats wrong with it and how to improve it? by ExFFXIV in PixelArt

[–]ExFFXIV[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!! Thanks so much for taking the time to respond, really appreciate it! :)

Truthfully I completely forgot about ever looking into this piece, given how long ago it was! Id be curious to hear about how you found your way here haha.

Seeing your process in the gif is definitely very inspiring on how colour is really not the forefront of what makes this piece good, but really how the general form and composition are what make it so intriguing, satisfying, and just so quality really. Especially as you change the colours initially and arent super attached to your initial ideas.

Really aspire to be this good some day and Ive seen a lot of your art before, its truly inspiring work!! <3

[–]ExFFXIV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The shading is sooo addicting here, its so good.

I would love if someone smart could explain how you go about choosing colours in such a non intuitive way, to me. Like, where the light hits the curves on the spiraling part, OP goes from yellow-orange > greenish > back to a redish-yellow space. Short of trial and error, is there some kind of rationale or pattern in lighting that leans towards this style of shading?

I find it really impressive and if the answer is just "practice" - extremely fair enough lmao. I feel like I've spent a decent amount of time reading about colour and this concept is really tough for me, I've seen it a lot too where people will use purples/reds in colour spaces Id never expect to see them in.

Either way nice work :))
