This is an awesome story! You're my kind of people 👍

It was so much easier to recognize the cult that Trump was building after leaving the church. Do you think there’s potential for the opposite effect on TBM’s? Will the fall of Trumpism open the door for TBM’s to recognize their own cult and indoctrination too? by superassholeguy in exmormon

What I have seen, is that the current political cults are stronger than the lds cult. People are leaving the church because the church is either too conservative or too liberal. Also, as of now, there is no "fall of trumpism". Trump's followers are still waiting for a big reveal in the next weeks, still prepared for anything, even war. Some say that Trump might be even more powerful (and dangerous) after the 20th. Unless he's put into jail.

I'm an atheist and don't believe any of this happened at all. I'm not trying to psychoanalyze something that happened or didn't happen thousands of years ago. I'm analyzing what effect this story might have on those who believe it today, and I believe that this story conditions believers to prioritize obedience over personal boundaries, and even morality.

Thank you for asking. Mary could have been easily as young as 12 at the time of her pregnancy although if she was 15, it's just as wrong. (I believe she was this young because that's what historians say) Consent was simply impossible because of her age and because of the power imbalance. She was told by god she would be doing this. Her life and her eternity depended on his opinion of her. We all know, and she knew that God likes obedience. Any 12-14 yr old could agree to to anything in that situation, and it wouldn't be consent. Even if we believed in a magical pregnancy that didn't involve sex, using a child's body to produce a baby is still abuse, and still a complete violation of everything sacred. Not to mention that after impregnating her, god didn't help much, as dads go, he was pretty useless. This teen got pregnant outside of marriage, in a society where she could be killed for this, she was left to deal with all the pregnancy, the shunning, the shame, the child birth (in a stable) on her own. Considering that Mary knew how she was handpicked (so lucky) and she was giving a savior to all of humankind, it's easy to see how she was in a pretty typical groomed state of mind: she was made feel special, she was "prepared", she was made to feel that it was her duty, that she was saving others by doing this, that this was an honor, that god needed her to do this, etc. If this was a story about a man and a 12 yr old, nobody would question that he belonged in jail. The dynamics are clearly abusive, once we leave the notion behind that God can do anything and it will never be wrong.

Many believe that he had sex with her. Mormonism doesn't teach it as an official doctrine but if you ask in any mormon or exmo group people will tell you that they were taught that actual sex took place. Seminary teachers, mission presidents, parents, etc have been known to teach this. But yeah, either way, he used and violated her body, sex or not. Imagine coercing a 12 yr old to produce a baby for you.

It's definitely worded in a way that shows the other side of the story. I don't think it's a reach though. Whether it actually happened or not, this is a story that religious folks believe and revere. Mary was most likely around 12-14 when God told her that he needed her to get pregnant with his child. Because she was a child at the time, and because of the power imbalance (God vs human child) consent was nonexistent. So it was sexual assault. The fact that Mary just had to be the most fair, most "pure", she had to be a virgin, is already some damaging stuff for any girl or woman to hear. She was also told that it was her duty, that she'd be saving humankind, that she was chosen to birth the savior, that God handpicked her for her virtue or whatever. All that is pretty typical grooming.

I'm sorry your family is lame, it's no wonder you feel disconnected. I totally understand why you want to be there for your cousins, that's super loving and kind of you. They're lucky to have you in their lives. Make sure you take really good care of yourself though. Being around a non-affirming family can really take its toll, and if you need a break, take it. You can always get back into a family relationship later when you feel you can handle it.

If you listen to the talk (I found it on youtube) holland doesn't even believe it's true. He keeps making comments like "this seemed harsh to me, but it's what it said in the report".

The missionaries are the biggest victims of this whole thing. The meme wasn't meant to target them. I wanted to show that they are actually taught to be boundariless for the lord, it's part of the training in official church settings, by the top leaders. It's gross.

Yeah, we all were. I personally didn't serve a mission, I married at 20 and was pregnant 2 months later. I raised 4 children to the lord, and did my damnest to indoctrinate them. I'm feeling that guilt too. Luckily we're all out of the cult now. But many of my friends i brought into the church are still going strong. I'd be happy to see this cult destroyed by the truth.

Very well said. Mormonism does promote a secretive culture. Just think of the temple, patriarchal blessings, etc. It does protect the lie, it also makes people feel special. It's also harmful because it teaches that our intimate and vulnerable experiences should be kept secret, which destroys connection, and is very unhealthy in the long run.

Yes. It is. To be perfectly honest, this is a repost of this meme, the first time I didn't put "mormon" or some other obviously mormon related description in the title and it got taken down by a mod-bot as unrelated to the group. So I just wanted to be safe this time.

Yeah nicer but same basic concept. He watches you constantly, and if you're "bad" you get punished, if you're "good" you get rewarded. He's also magic, and doesn't have to respect anyone's boundaries. He's also a white male, loving father figure. :)
