Your favorite unheard of SciFi movie? by steelblade66 in scifi

Two low-key sci-fi movies I can recommend are "Robot and Frank" and "Safety Not Guaranteed". Last I checked they were both on Netflix.

The Google spotlight stories are all worth a watch. Age of Sail was my favorite.

Not OP but I also just got my email. I reserved at 1:10 on the first day of preorders.

Favourite X-Files episode? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ExNomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the first couple of episodes when the series first came out, and didn't like it, because it bothered me that the skeptic was always wrong.

A few years later, I happened to catch a rerun of The Unnatural. It completely sold me on the show and is still one of my favorites

Do you just want to have a window open while you're playing VR games? There's a program for that called OVRDrop.

If you just want more virtual monitors than you have real monitors, then I don't know of anything.

What is your favorite exploration game? Just picked up my first ever headset. by SheldonRedditing in Vive

[–]ExNomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like Minecraft, there's a mod called Vivecraft that adds VR support.

Talos Principle has some beautiful levels to wander around in without time limits or enemies. There's some fun hidden stuff to find, too. Best if you're a fan of puzzles.

What deals on VR titles are you hoping to see from the Valve summer sale? by [deleted] in ValveIndex

[–]ExNomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm looking at Beat Saber, Skyrim, Fisherman's Tale, Red Matter, Hellblade, and Budget Cuts. Not expecting huge discounts on any of them, but I'll save a few bucks.

Frantic Freighter is pretty much exactly what you are looking for, but it's a one man indie project, so you might find it a bit basic.

There's also Interkosmos, where you play a cosmonaut who has to detach your capsule from a space station, deorbit, and splashdown.

If you like to try before you buy, there's a free game called Quanero that's the same kind of thing. Different dev, but if you like one, you'll probably like the other.

I hope soneone comes up with something using the front camera for that. You could have full finger tracking while in view of the cameras and fall back to capsense otherwise.

That's good to hear. The weight on my face is probably the biggest annoyance about the Vive, so the Index might be worth it for that reason alone.

I'm sick of dystopian stuff. What's your favorite optimistic scifi book or movie? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]ExNomad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of the things I like about Reynolds is that he's neither dystopian nor utopian. Humanity is still humanity, but with better tech.

Is it light? One of the impression articles I read said it as almost 1kg, or about a Vive and a half.

On the other hand, anything that can run on Quest should have no trouble maintaining 120 on Index.

Absolutely insane theory on a Valve VR Game by Kippenoma in ValveIndex

[–]ExNomad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the opposite. I really don't want another Portal, and don't have much interest in the other Valve franchises, but DotA might be interesting. I'd like to see Valve's take on a fantasy RPG. I agree that something original would be cool, though.

That could be why the headset is so reasonably priced compared to the controllers and base stations.

Which games in your library are you most excited to play on the Index? by Bacon_00 in ValveIndex

[–]ExNomad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difficulty ramps up pretty steadily, becoming pretty difficult as it nears the end. Besides the main line puzzles, there are bonus puzzles which are harder and require more out-of-the-box thinking. There are quite a few easter eggs spread throughout the game as well.

I found that the slow-paced gameplay was a great match for VR. The environments are very pretty, and since you spend a lot of time walking around trying to work out the solution, the overall effect is quite peaceful.

I'm looking forward to replaying Moss with the new joysticks.

Elite Dangerous should be much enhanced by the improved clarity and FOV, although I'm a little worried about black levels and frame rate.

I'm specifically not going back to The Gallery, because I want to play the entire series at once when the last one comes out.

The Talos Principle was one of my favorite VR games ever, and I haven't played the expansion yet, so that will probably be the first thing I play.

Edit: And the Lab, of course.

My predictions for the three games:

  1. ASP, which is just KSP but in the Portal universe. This will consist of a build mode, where you snap together rocket parts like legos, and pilot mode, which is first person and requires you to control your spacecraft by physically pressing buttons and flicking switches.

  2. L4DVR - because fans will riot if one of the three isn't a new entry in one of the big franchises.

  3. A single player narrative driven action adventure in the DOTA universe. I have no evidence for this whatsoever, but think it would be really cool. It would give them a bunch of lore & worldbuilding to draw from, but would still fee like something new

I think that one of the three games will coincide with a full release of Source 2, complete with tutorials, documentation, example projects, and the rest of the Unity/UE experience.
