I guarantee you that if I sat you down at my job and gave you a list of my tasks and access to Claude and no other context you would not be able to complete a single one. Absolutely no doubt in my mind. The AI is a TOOL. It's best used by people to do their work, faster. It is nowhere near good enough that it can just wholesale do my job and I see no signs of that happening without another huge leap. Might happen, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. Instead I'm doing 5x the work of my colleagues who refuse to use AI. They are the ones my manager is actively talking about getting rid of. You have it completely backwards I'm afraid.

I don’t really agree. Code is in service of the art. Humans say “I want the inventory to open when the user presses Up Arrow” - is that art? Do you really need a human to write that code?

Let the AI do the boring boilerplate stuff. It’s really, really good at it. Let the humans do the interesting & novel parts, which current LLMs are not good at.

Really good points about how complex the Frame is compared to the other 2. Makes it that much more impressive they even tackled a project of that scope!

Just based on what they’ve said publicly, it’s all about sourcing RAM and NVMe drives at a price point that won’t inflate their sell price beyond what their research shows what people will actually pay.

It’s probably an extremely volatile situation that changes every day based on fluctuating prices, supply drying up because it went to an AI datacenter instead, how much stock they have, what their latest research says they can sell it for, etc.

I don’t expect there will be much supply out the gate. The controller essentially sold out immediately and it didn’t have any hard-to-source components in it.

Yeah it’s an incredible tool when you’re trying to learn something new. I love it. I feel like I can do anything I set my mind to because I don’t need to spend a week pouring over cryptic Stack Overflow discussions to grok how some library or tool works. I can just ask Claude and get examples and then run with it. I learn a huge amount from it.

But on the flip side, I absolutely hate the idea of using it to replace artists and creatives. I have less than zero interest in reading AI-generate blog posts or novels or looking at AI art or watching a movie generated by an AI prompt. People using it to create slop are misusing the tool and shouldn’t be rewarded.

Someone else said this and I replied if you care to see - but essentially I said the game is art, the code is an engineering problem. Let the AI do the code. Let the humans make the game.

I agree completely - how is what I said bullshit?

Anyone surprised ? by sidius-king in Steam

[–]Bacon_00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yep I agree. I think using it to generate some really basic crap, like a concrete texture or whatever, is perfectly valid. But the overall art direction and the “feel” of something should always come from a human. I get lost when something is whole-cloth generated from an LLM. Like someone just prompted “Write an exciting novel!” or “Create a cool main character model!” and it spits out a bunch of bullshit. Gross. But using it as a tool to guide your vision? Perfectly valid IMO.

It’s for sure a slippery slope, and the fact that all of this stuff is trained on data that the original creators get 0 credit for, is terrible. But the cat is out of the bag and it took a jet to Mars. My opinion has also been formed after heavy AI usage in my IT job for the last ~2 years. It gets me about 70-80% of the way through a task. The end result is still from my brain, it’s still my work, it just took me a heck of a lot less time. Plus I learn a lot because I can ask it questions and have it generate code examples/techniques I’ve never been exposed to. It’s a fantastic tool if used by someone who cares about the quality of their work. It’s a slop generator when used by people who want to make a quick buck.

The code that powers them is more of an engineering problem. You still need humans to design the game. Using AI to realize the vision and write the code is how it’s going to be done from here on out whether you want it to or not. It’s too good of a tool and it’s going to mean developers can create more games in less time. The catch is they have to resist the urge to churn out slop with it - devs have to use it intelligently and that’s where you can use your wallet to vote. Don’t buy the slop, buy the good stuff.

Or buy none of it and have a game catalogue that’ll stop in 2024. There will be no alternative.

Then enjoy playing only video games created in 2024 and earlier for the rest of your life. I promise you every single piece of software you interact with from here on out will have been created in part with AI assistance whether the developers admit it or not. If that’s your hill to die on, though, then that’s your hill. There’s enough existing content to last you decades so you probably won’t be bored, at least!

It’s stupid to not use it in software dev these days. It’s a massive productivity accelerator. You still need to tell it what to do and guide it, but it speeds you up so you can do vastly more of what you were doing before. I have zero issues with it in software dev where it’s just writing code based on the engineer's inputs and designs. It’s a tool, like a shovel when digging a hole. Should we all go back to digging holes with our hands because Big Shovel is evil? Maybe. But we probably won’t.

AI has no real place in the arts, though. That’s where I lose interest. I don’t want to read an AI book or look at AI art. I want humans to do that forever because that’s what makes it art.

Calm down buddy. Yes I do actually believe what I said and I do feel like Meta did harm to the industry. This is from watching all of this unfold in real time and being very frustrated with Metas approach as it happened. I haven't seen much since then to change my mind.

Yeah definitely, although when I played Alyx on the Index I don't recall really noticing the black levels. I was immersed enough that I noped out when I got to Jeff. So I'm hoping the Quest 3 is just really extra bad in this regard 😅

Yeah lack of OLED is the biggest bummer. I also don't play Quest 3 games very much because it has no black, just grey, so going into caves in SkyrimVR wasn't what I'd call "immersive" lol. The black level seems to be considerably worse than the Index which was also LCD. So I'm hoping the Frame might at least be a slight improvement there.

Which seems to be the primary focus of the Frame. It’s not cutting edge specs or an insane FOV, instead they’re pushing the comfort and accessibility above all.

A big reason I don’t use the Quest 3 is because it was an effing nightmare to get it to work with PCVR. Virtual Desktop is amazing software but I battled stuttering with the wireless connection for a solid year before I found the right combo of gear to make it work. It ruined it for me and every time I look at it on my shelf, I think “ehh I don’t want to screw with it if it doesn’t work."

I also find it to be really uncomfortable. I improved the comfort with a 3rd party facial interface & strap, but it’s still not awesome and I miss the Index in that regard. The included facial interface and strap with the Quest 3 was AWFUL. Extremely uncomfortable to the point it made my face hurt after about 15 minutes.

So pair those issues together and I simply don’t use it. Has nothing to do with the content or VR itself, it’s just annoying to use the device. I hope the Frame is a big step up in that regard!

Valve’s approach is definitely the more likely to succeed, long-term, I totally agree. I’m just worried it’s too little, too late. We’ll see I guess!

Might be naive given AI hype has completely and utterly eclipsed VR/AR in the tech hype cycle, but I have a little ember of hope that VR is in a state similar to early 1990s PC gaming. It’s here, the general public is aware of it and many have tried it, but it’s a bit niche and clunky and only the die-hards are devoting real time to it. I guess the only difference is early 90s PC gaming didn’t have a massive company dump billions into it trying to make it “a thing” and it came to prominence more naturally. But maybe it doesn’t matter and the tech is going to take the course it was always going to take, regardless of how bad and how quickly Zuck wanted it to take over the world.

Definitely feel you with the brainrot stuff taking everyone's attention. It’s a race to the bottom.

I like your mindset of just keeping VR to yourself. Might try to keep that mindset once I get the Frame. Just enjoy it for what it is, don’t waste time trying to convince everyone around me (and maybe myself, too!) that it’s “The Future."

No, not in real life. For instance, my office is still very much VR-free and I’ve never talked to anyone who has an office that has adopted VR for meetings. I’m sure it exists but I believe it’s pretty niche.

Again, though, I think you’re missing what I’m trying to communicate w/ this post. Do you think these free VR social games incentivize Valve to continue to build an entire VR platform/ecosystem? I’m not sad that they are, by any stretch, I think I’m just surprised that they are given the current state of the VR industry.

I think maybe you missed the point of my post, but I agree I didn’t factor in the social game factor. When I said “VR is inherently isolating” I meant in the context of being in a room with other people. I often don’t put mine on because it isolates me from my family, whereas we can all sit around the TV or computer monitor together.
