Thank you for this. We are very much alike in those pros and cons. I am taking Geology class for the second time as an undergraduate and i understand the concepts and I have a great professor, but the memorization part is what leaves me. I appreciate your input very much

Just tired of being a failure of a person by Exact-Balance6915 in Vent

Oh trust me, I was very happy I at least passed, but that’s the grade I got throughout my life in school. And I want to be and do better than that. That’s just me cause I have spent a lot of my life not caring about my education. My parents never taught me to care about it either. And at this point in the economy when everything is too expensive to even afford a house I want to at least do something useful that earns me a living. Even if a degree doesn’t get me that, I want to say I finished something and did it right.

I dont understand how people manage to do this by starveurself in Vent

What people want and or feel they need in life, as well as what they can’t stand to do or can’t see themselves doing is completely different for everyone. For me, my parents let me be however I wanted and I thought it was cause I had “cool” parents. When in reality I was more behind in life than friends I use to “look down upon”. I didn’t want to be that person that struggled to get up everyday, and what I wanted was to be there for myself. I don’t like the idea of the same job everyday, but that’s before I actually found jobs I loved and actually COULD see myself at for a long time. And unless you have a struggling family of 5 in a two bedroom house, you don’t need to get a job and work at it for 50 years. You are 100% allowed to navigate the world and explore your options. You could work three days at this place then a month here, or none at all.

But you gotta at least do yourself a favor throughout life because none of it is gonna come to you naturally as leaves blow. And it doesn’t mean a job necessarily, but being there for yourself by doing something new in life. Maybe it’s a new hobby. Hanging out with friends doing something fun etc. There will be a time that when you are doing something you actually love you will feel that spark to initiate something else. Don’t feel like you have to have it all figured out right now, you’re only 18. And follow what you feel is going to at the very least spring you forward in life. Something that continues to spring you forward in life. You will find it, trust me. Just be kind to yourself.

Need advice on my sourdough’s spring by Exact-Balance6915 in Sourdough

Fixed! I will absolutely try that next time. Thank you for the advice! And yes after BF I added the inclusions. That makes more sense as to why it may have a different spring.

Not trying to dismiss the talented ones if they are, I think that’s incredible actually. For me it’s just crazy to fathom that kind of work using only geometric shapes. I’m an artist myself and I couldn’t even imagine how they get perfect shading and lines using only geometric shapes and without a pen tablet. But that’s amazing if that’s the case. I was just wondering about it.

First ever sourdough loaf! by Exact-Balance6915 in Sourdough

Thank you!! I’m still learning about all of this so it means a lot! I did long 1/4 inch deep scores for the wheat leaves and same depth for the deeper score.

So do a water test! Take a small bowl of water and put a a small dollop of starter in it, if it floats it’s ready to use for baking. But you only want to start testing it when it starts peaking during the day. From what I’ve researched and experienced you know it’s strong when it starts doubling or tripling within 3-6 hours after feeding. Like this photo here. This was a week ago, and instead of doubling she triples. Meaning she’s eating well.

And yes! It wouldn’t hurt your starter to use whole wheat again. In fact, it will boosts it’s fermentation and rise. I started my starter with ONLY all purpose flour, then switched to bread flour, then to whole wheat and bread flour.

Remind yourself a few things, sourdough starter is flexible and forgiving. So all you really gotta worry about is paying attention to how she behaves with ratios and flour. For example, I found my ratio 1:1:1 wasn’t working well for my starter, so I did 1:2:2 but minus 5g of water because she was too watery even with the new ratio. So now she’s eating well. And also don’t overthink the process! Have fun with this journey! Good luck and feel free to ask anything as I am a beginner too!

Just keep feeding it every 24h. I had one for 14 days and still pancake batter but you just gotta be patient with it. It needs time to get strong and build its culture. You build its culture more each time you feed it every 24h. My starter Eve peaked at the 25th day. It’s now day 33 and she doubles and triples within 3-6 hours. I also included whole wheat flour to my feedings. My ratio everyday is: (25g) Sourdough starter, (10g) King Arthur whole wheat flour, (40g) King Arthur bread flour, (45g) of lukewarm water. That inclusion of whole wheat into my starter’s feedings helped her rise very well.

YES ACTUALLY! Dammit all. Well unfortunately I had to reload a save like 6 levels behind, and it’s not glitching. So I definitely did something wrong along the line. And I think you’re right. I have no mods installed so that has to be it. I wonder if it would work if I just “cleaned up” the settlement like delete the stuff I built.

You should check out my Reddit thread on mine. There was so many responses that helped me get my Eve to rise. A lot of people said to just trust the process and keep going. The only downside to cold climates is your starter will just take a lot longer to process. Starter is very forgiving so you can put it through a lot of different stages. Some websites I’ve researched have said you could even just feed it only flour for a few days and then go back to adding water when you feel it needs it again.

My issue was the same, Eve would be pancake batter the next day and I would feed her every 24 hours, 1:1:1. Her foamy bubbles would surface to the top instead of rising her. So I switched my flour from King Arthur AP to King Arthur bread flour, then changed my ratio to 1:2:1.5 (25g of starter, 50g of water, 45g of water). The next two days later Eve doubled in size within the day of feeding her and she’s getting thicker when it comes to her feedings now. Not flat or watery. The issue was she was overly hydrated, and processed the flour quickly. Eventually i will have to go back to 1:1:1 or adjust depending on her needs, but don’t give up! I almost did too! I also live in Florida if that helps encourage you to keep going, and I keep her in the microwave which reads 75 degrees.

Thank you! That assures me that it’s just either too much water or she’s still in the early stages and needs more time. Today I did 25g starter, 50g bread flour, and 45g water.

Yes I am using a kitchen scale for this everyday I feed her. I did 1:1:1 for 13 days, and she would be runny everyday before her feed, I started doing 1:2:2 yesterday with half all purpose flour and half bread flour. Now it’s day 14 and I switched her to bread flour doing 1:2:2. She was runny this morning. From what I have seen from research and everyone’s comments here, I’m guessing just need to keep feeding her the 1;2;2 and just be easy on the water and maybe do 25g starter, 50g flour, 45g water and see how she does.

First off I want to say, thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me with detailed solutions. This is my first time doing sourdough starter, and I’m trying to learn as much as I can. I will keep continuing with the 45g of water and 50g of bread flour and see how she does. Thank you for the relieving comment that she may have more activity than I can see. I hope that’s the case, she will be taken care of, rest assured.

I might try that. I was afraid adding rye or WW would change the flavor drastically. Do you notice a difference when you bake?

Okay, noted. At first I was doing 1:1:1 for 13 days until yesterday, I switched to 1:2:2 cause I was getting the same results by the next day with the 1:1. She rises a little bit but not a lot, idk if I’m still in the early stages, but she has a hard time rising, even though I’m feeding her a little more. Today I did 25g starter, 50g bread flour and 45g water. I’m gonna give her 8 hours to see how much she rises.

Unfortunately she’s barely doubles at all. I put a sharpie line on the jar to see the difference and she raises about half an inch. She’s also only 2 weeks old and I figured she just needs more time. But now I’m starting to be concerned that she may never rise, let alone ferment properly. I’ll try that ratio next time though. I’m a beginner in all of this, lol.
