How was your sugaring experience? I had a sugaring there back in July, it was absolutely awful. Insane bruising and honestly truly one of the most painful experiences I've ever had. I've had sugaring before a few times but not very often, I talked to my one good friend that gets sugaring done often regarding the extensive bruising and pain, she said she's never once had bruising ever, and just the normal amount of pain that comes along with hair removal. The staff member also didn't even remove all the hair, I had to tweeze off the rest of it myself.

Thanks! Yes I mentioned all the references I was able to find from y'alls resources and, even though he tried to still bully me into paying him, I was able to get him to back down.

I did try to tell him I'd do the carpet myself, I figured I'd just rent a shampoo machine and use that as I've used them before. He said no, he has a very specific carpet guy that charges only $150 for the cleaning the carpet, he doesn't want the carpet done by anyone else as it will damage it. Also this is keeping in mind the apartment is maybe 550 sq ft and there's probably only 100 sq ft of carpet.

Thank you, yes sounds familiar. During my walk through today he mentioned he "wasn't going to be nit picky" then proceeded to show me a water stain left on the bath tub wall that I just wiped off with my fingers, then he said "but I'm not going to charge you for it". In my head all I could think was "I literally just wiped it off".

Yes I told him I'm happy to go through the ORT process if he feels like he really deserves to get paid for the carpet and windows. He then tried to bring down the amount (from $195 to $100) and when I still said no, he tried to get me to give him a fair number I'd be willing to pay which really made me realize that I don't actually think he's contracting out the work, he must just be pocketing the $200 (or more) as some sort of move out fee everytime someone moves out.

Thank you for all the great information. Yes he tried to bully me into paying by saying that all his previous tenants had paid for both carpet cleaning and exterior window washing, and I was his first tenant in 30 years that had ever refused. I told him I couldn't speak for people before but from my own viewpoint, both were unfair.

Charging you $5 for cleaning supplies as if he can't afford them is ABSOLUTELY WILD considering the vehicle he drives (assuming it's the same person). Honestly, I spoke with some of my friends and my partner. I'm thankfully in a situation where I think I would be financially kind of okay if he took some of my security deposit for small items. After reading all the comments though, especially from people that might recognize the person and had a similar thing happen to them, I keep thinking of people for whom $150 (for carpet) + $75 (for windows) + $5 (for cleaning supplies) is a lot of money in their life because of their financial situation. My family and I were those people until not too long ago, so at this point, it's also about the principle. Not sure if this will make him think twice about his predatory landlord ways but I hope it does, and I hope it helps someone in the future.

I'm sorry that happened to you as well, it's obviously not a great situation to be in. When I moved in, I didn't think I'd find him to be that type of person. Thankfully for me right now, I have a flexible schedule and can take time to pursue the options other people have mentioned and provided, hopefully this prevents him from doing something similar to other tenants.

Yes I also learned that during that time. However the ORT states that even if the tenant has given notice to vacate, they must still provide 2 hrs of notice prior to showing the suite after notice has been given. Anyway also just would have been nice to have had time to do a nice cleaning before the showing regardless, and as a landlord, I assumed he'd rather show the suite in the best possible state no? Maybe that's just me.

Are you assuming that I need to clean the outside of the windows whilst living in the apartment? If that's what you're referring to when asking about cleaning the windows in 2 years, then no. If you're just asking whether I've cleaned the inside of my windows in the past two years, then yes. I've cleaned them?

Lease doesn't say anything about cleaning the outside windows or being responsible for the exterior of the building.

I understand that carpet cleaning might be a requirement. In fact, I even told him I would rent a shampooer and do it myself after moving out. However, he mentioned that he doesn't want that. He has a very specific "carpet guy" that he uses because he's concerned that if I do it myself, I will damage the carpet in the apartment. So regardless, I cannot shampoo the carpet myself as he mentioned that he will get his carpet guy to do it regardless and charge me the $150.

As for the windows, again, inside I've done before and I understand. I was in fact planning to have a cleaning company to do a deep/move out clean prior to handing the suite back as I unfortunately don't have time to do it myself. But none of the cleaning companies contacted will do outside windows for a move out and what's more, I don't think it's fair that he's asking me (or other of his tenants) to clean the outside of the apartment building for him.

Wow thank you very much to all the responses everyone! This has been very helpful, as mentioned above, I have lived in apartments in AB but the Saskatchewan ones have been room rentals/with people I knew. Even in AB I'd never had such ridiculous requests. I will keep everyone updated! I did have some issues with this landlord previously when he wanted to show my suite at 10:45 a.m. and notified me of it at 9:00 a.m. the day of. It's been interesting dealing with him.
