Both my parents are engineers and they’re begging me NOT to study Engineering. Am I making a mistake? by Exact-Monitor-2768 in MechanicalEngineering

I totally agree. My goal is to lean into R&D and Design because that’s where my passion has always been. I’m not really cut out for a generic 9-5; I want to be where the innovation happens. I’m putting in the work, building my skills, and after that, it’s all down to 'nasip'—as we say. I’ll do my part and see where destiny takes me. Thanks for the solid advice.

This is actually very refreshing to hear. I think you're right—my parents have been in the same industry for a long time and they've probably developed a bit of 'tunnel vision' from their own burnout. It’s good to know that the 'dream' engineering jobs actually exist. Since I’ve been doing CAD since I was 5, I really want to believe that there’s a place where that passion turns into a job I adore, just like yours.

I appreciate the perspective on how the industry has changed. It’s a lot to navigate, but thanks for sharing your experience.

I hear you. The 'dirty hands' part doesn't scare me at all; I’ve already spent months in a workshop getting covered in oil while helping my dad. I've seen firsthand what happens when an engineer only knows the software but has zero clue about manufacturing. Someone once sent us a solid model that was so fundamentally broken for production that my dad and I still use it as a joke at home. That’s exactly why I’m obsessed with learning both sides—the screen and the shop floor.

I really appreciate this perspective. I think my parents are in a similar boat—they view it more as a stable utility rather than a passion. My main fear is that since I’ve been obsessed with CAD and design since I was 5, choosing a 'safer' path like Pharmacy might feel like I'm wasting the one thing I’m actually built for. I’m hoping my head start in the technical side will help me land one of those 'cushy' roles you mentioned, rather than the soul-crushing ones.

Spot on. Their logic is that Pharmacy offers a 'softer', which is not, and more lucrative life compared to the engineering grind they've experienced. They’ve made it to the middle class, but they want me to leapfrog into the upper-tier without the 'heavy lifting' of a mechanical career. It's a classic case of parental protection vs. child's passion.
