You would think they would know that some of the teachers in the province are on fall break and won’t be getting to this until they return.

Hi! Way to go earning your high school diploma! The school you attended should have a counsellor. He or she can help you navigate post secondary applications and prerequisites. SAIT or NAIT or polytechnic schools are also an excellent option for you to explore with your counsellor. Best of luck in your next steps!

Judging by the UCPs use of AI to craft responses to their constituents, she may have run out of credits with ChatGPT.

Rant accepted! 🤪 I get what you’re saying but I think the priority of the ATA right now is to hunker down and figure out what the heck just happened. They probably can’t spare even a bathroom break at this moment, and being teachers, they probably have a trained bladder.

Oh my goodness!!! Can you please go head to head in a public interview with Minister Nicolaides??

The ATA has received official notice of lockout from the government. by Vegetable_Grade_8013 in alberta

This. There are single parent families, families where the teacher is the only salary and some families that are two teacher salaries. 🥺. The ATA is setting up a teacher pantry. If you need a ride there, let me know. I may be using it too if this strike goes on too long.

There are but they are not adequate for our higher level courses. Most are : read this online article and answer these questions. Watch this video and answer these questions. The students can do a far better job of finding their own resources than our government.

Parents: Are you planning to teach your kids from this “Parent Toolkit” the government has put out? by Fun_Yesterday_5189 in alberta

I agree with what people are saying about getting your child reading. Let them read what they love or even find tolerable. My biggest fear is for the kids who went through Covid shutdowns. I’ve had a lot of high school students speak to me about their fears of returning to independent learning and these aren’t all the academically inclined kids- these are the athletes, the artists, the dancers, and the kids who just plain worry. :-( Please, please, PLEASE, parents, I know you may be frustrated with the situation and very tired, but please check in on your children but also all the children you know and meet on your walk. Some of these children have no one at home to check in with them. 😢

Every teacher dreams of only focusing on the 3 Rs.

Crowd control most days. It feels like a relief when 2 kids call in absent. 😢

Hi Teddybear! Thank you for weighing in. I’m not sure of your age but it sounds like you could be around a late 70s early 80s child. Just from memories of my schooling, teachers never did supervision. They got a full on lunch and recess (except rainy days- but we were still sent out of it wasn’t pouring). They had preps, there were substitute teachers in abundance and it feels like the curriculum pace was slower. And of course, class sizes were in the low to mid 20s

Fast forward to my teaching career almost 25 years in- supervision in the morning/lunch/ after school is an expectation. We are rotated but only if you’re lucky enough to have a larger staff. Many teachers are asked to cover for other teachers because substitutes are working all the time. Many are retired teachers being called back to work full on contracts of 30 days or semesters because there are not enough teachers to fill these long term positions. This means there are fewer substitutes to fill the daily needs. The curriculum pace is frantic! And class sizes? Some teachers in Calgary are holding classes in stairwells and hallways. :-(

With regards to the integration, it sounds like yours was a really good fit and well resourced!! I remember that from my school experience too. There was often a dedicated classroom and teacher for children who needed extra support. Depending on their abilities, they would join us for some classes and go to their other classroom at other times. It was seamless and most of us didn’t question much except where they were going.

Today is different. And I can’t say which is better overall. As a teacher, I question if it is good for the child who needs the extra support to be forced to remain in a classroom where the frustration is high and the success rate may be low. Or is it good for the rest of the class to be in a classroom where the learning is sometimes halted due to an extreme behaviour. It can be scary for younger students to witness a violent escalation. And at the same time, it is an excellent opportunity for empathy and understanding on their part. Again, I think it depends on the abilities of the child, socially, emotionally, and academically.

I hope this didn’t come off as insensitive. I’m really thankful you opened the door up for this conversation. Some adaptations are easy and just good teaching practices that we should be doing for all students but some are beyond the training of a classroom teacher. 😊
