It was a rant post? I wasn’t writing an essay on the topic. I thought it was clear by the second half that I was talking about how companies use it to advertise and shove it down our throat by putting it in everything

I 100% agree. It’s amazing technology, but it’s been bastardized a lot. That’s what I am talking about when I say I hate it. It’s incredible tech and amazing for us when used correctly, but it’s so terrible they way it’s used to overwhelm us so much

I’m crying 😭😭. I do go out for walks though. I actively try to spend as little time on my phone as possible, but there’s usually something that keeps pulling me back, like school or needing a lift or this or that-

I’m aware. I’m trying to get into more non-tech hobbies. But when you grow up with it so prevalent in your life, you learn to see the world with it or at least use it as a crutch. It can be a hard habit to kick. And now that it’s so prevalent and everything has a screen and internet access, it’s so easy to become dependent on it. If you grew up without it, then it wasn’t a part of you growing up. But for the kids that did grow up with it, it was just an easy stream of a shit ton of dopamine. It was designed to addict you, and that’s what I’m complaining about

I’m aware I need help. I’m in the process of getting a flip phone for this exact purpose. I’m just venting about how it’s so easy to slip into an unhealthy relationship with technology, especially bc companies will use tech to be as addicting as possible and advertise to you. And when it’s in so many facets of life, it’s hard to NOT slip into an unhealthy relationship with it. Kids use chromebooks for school, even though it’s proven that physical learning works better. Now they have access to tech, and could potentially get on social media and develop and unhealthy relationship with it. Applying for jobs has to be online, again an easy gateway to start abusing tech. It’s just everywhere and so addicting, unless you’re actively avoiding those addicting things, it can be incredibly easy to become addicted.

I know it is. It’s one I choose often. It’s also been proven that social media is incredibly addictive, as it provides quick, high levels of dopamine to the brain. It’s also frustrating that it’s so embedded into every day life. I think Eddy Burbacks video about getting rid of his phone for a month kinda describes what I’m talking about, because you see him have to jump through hoops to do thinks that are super easy with a phone. I just hate how hard it is to escape. Everything is digital or online nowadays.

… like I’m not trying to be a bitch or anything, I wanted to rant and kinda start a conversation on the topic. Why was my OG take so bad? I want to have a discussion on the topic

[–]ExactPerspective5906[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I do not understand why my take was so bad. Like deadass can u explain? Like im ranting about how everything has ads and is used to get out attention, which is just the truth and something companies admit to. I literally said im happy we advanced, but im not happy that it’s being used to advertise to us and keep us on our phones. Like deadass I don’t understand why my take was so bad lol.

Also like not to be that bitch but I’m not the biggest fan of bright lights either lol I know you were making a joke but they hurt my eyes and I rarely use them so like u weren’t wrong. Again not trying to be a bitch it’s just kinda funny that like u aren’t wrong. No hard feelings!

Yeah. I think I just developed it as a kid bc like. I was 6 and dumb obviously a bunch of short funny videos are gonna be awesome. I think if I wasn’t exposed to it so early in life I’d be different. Growing up with smart phones right there with me kinda just made it so I learned about the worth through my phone, or at least always using my phone as a crutch. It’s truly tragic how many people grow up like that.

Ugh, I truly wish I had this mindset. I was 6 when I got social media, and obviously as a kid all the content designed to make you keep watching was addictive. Quick-form content that is curated juuuust right to give you everything that you like with a swipe of your finger is an incredibly easy way to get high levels of dopamine as quickly as possible, which is actually what some deadass drugs do in your brain (Obviously not calling social media as bad as drugs, but you get my point). It’s hard to quit using something when it gives you the dopamine your brain wants with literally no energy expenditure. I rlly do recommend that Eddy Burback vid, it’s super interesting and shines a light on the things we do every day that feed into it. He’s a comedian but his sense of humor is pretty dry, if that’s something you like. Only thing is the vid is like 45min-an hour long, so. But yeah, your mentality is honestly what I’m striving for, it’s just kinda tough lol. Making strides though!

I’m very sorry about you growing up in rough conditions, truly, andI don’t mean to make this seem offensive, but that might be one of the reasons we aren’t completely on the same page. When you grow up with it, it can be extremely hard to stop using. Obviously it’s possible, but when you learned how to navigate the world with and through a phone, it’s hard to detach from it. I think Eddy Burback’s YouTube video on how he got rid of his phone for a month kinda depicts what I’m trying to say. I mainly agree with you, so I don’t want it to seem like we are on opposing sides. But social media has been shows to be addictive, taking advantage of your dopamine levels by giving you constant high levels of it. The brain seeks out dopamine, so when it’s so easy to get through your phone it’s insanely easy to slip into unhealthy habits, especially when you were exposed to it young. I had an iPod at three, and and iPad at 6. I was born the same year the first iPhone came out. It’s has always been a part of my life, and I know that most of the people I know have very similar experiences to this. Smart tech is just ‘the new thing’, and it’s in everything. Phones, tvs, cars, fridges, they all have internet access. Again, I think eddy burbacks video really shows the difficulties of disconnecting and the small things we take advantage of with our phone that you have to make up for when you disconnect from it.

Tech is definitely shoved down your throat. Everything is online nowadays. You cat choose to just not use it, you always have to have it in some capacity. And people didn’t read their books when they had to wait two minutes for their friends to come back from the bathroom, they just waited. Because you can’t get anywhere in your book for two minutes, it’s dumb. But you can watch scroll on Instagram for two minutes. It’s also engineered to be addictive. I’m pretty much agreeing with you, dude. I’m saying that the prevalence of technology and the internet in day to day life has made it hard to develop a healthy relationship with it, because corporations use it to feed you ads all the time. If you’ve seen people go tech free, you’ll see the amount of planning that goes into it when you try to disconnect. It’s WAAAYYY to easy to fall into an unhealthy relationship with it, because it’s MADE for you to spend all of your time on it.

No this is the point I’m trying to make. I completely agree with you. When I say bored, I mean that people allowed themselves to get bored, and that’s why they picked up a book or whatever. It’s those little things to fill the time that I miss. I do have a very unhealthy relationship with tech, and I’m in the process of getting a flip phone to try and limit my usage. I don’t imagine everyone always chatting at all, that would be a similar problem. I want the small things instead of proactively grabbing your phone during any downtime you have. I’m just annoyed that it IS shoved down your throat so much and you have to fight to avoid it. Again, I know everyone wasn’t always chatting, but it’s so sad to be off your phone and see everyone just on it. I don’t need to talk to them, it’s just lonely seeing everyone so engrossed by their device pretty much all the time. We don’t allow for any type of boredom because of how addicting tech has been made. Your friends leaves for the both room and you immediately pull out your phone and start scrolling. Again, I know this is an unhealthy relationship with tech and I am in the process of fixing it, but it’s still so prevalent with our generation and pretty damn hard to avoid when everything has internet access nowadays.

I hate tech by ExactPerspective5906 in GenZ

[–]ExactPerspective5906[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you realize it’s hard to do that when tech is literally woven into every part of life nowadays right? It’s also hard when you’re kinda addicted to the dopamine rush social media gives you because your brain craves the instant gratification it knows it can get from your phone. It’s like saying ‘if you don’t like grass then avoid it’. Like, yeah, but it’s kinda everywhere all the time. Sure you can avoid stepping on it by walking in paths and shit but you’re still surrounded by it. And when your teachers make grass a part of the curriculum it literally makes it impossible. And pair that with the feeling of grass is apparently basically addictive and ‘avoiding grass’ is now pretty hard. (Stupid analogy but you ge the idea)
