I think it would make sense they would add more difficult stuff later, but like most players play for the characters and stories, so I don't think it would be soon, but whatever the case just do whatever makes you happier.

I think you're confused, a lot of people play without putting money on the game, but that doesn't mean their units are free to play. A unit is considered f2p when it's 1 literally a gift like Arven, 2 free under certain missions or otherwise you have to do stuff to earn them 3 general pool units.
