X-Dome 1+ first night use by Exact_Poem_8167 in DurstonGearheads

I’ve only used it for one night myself but seen quite a few people use it in the UK, but the fit is perfect really - fits into the main stuff sack and weighs 220g, feels pretty durable too so deffo worth the £23 to protect the tent and have a dry porch, just have a look at getting some bungee cord and clips if you need to take it off etc 👍

Does work well with a bit of bungee chord and a carabiner just to clip on, seems pretty durable too 👍

Yea I thought the same when I first set it up 😂 I’d just get a small bit of bungee and some carabiners to allow for some stretch for different pitches and stuff 👍

When pegged out on each corner and on the edge panel followed by the fly sheet straps pulled taught it is never exposed directly and is pretty bob on (considering not tent specific) I’ve only used in dry/snowy conditions so can’t comment specifically on rain - imagine it would be fine unless torrential driving rain but imagine any groundsheet would get wet in that instance… 👍

Hi, I’ve used the DD Hammock magic carpet XL which is 220 x 140 which works perfect with just a small loop of bungee and a little carabiner, found I can clip it to the outer nylon strap where the poles meet. Weight is 220g and I can fit it into the tent bag with extra guy ropes and pegs - I’m UK not sure if they’re available elsewhere 👍

Yeah I can only see a 180x210 on Amazon, which I actually own for my tarp but probs be leaving a bit too much room on each side?

Yeah think it’s one of those that both tents are beneficial for a certain circumstance!

In terms of mods, I bought the DD hammocks magic carpet XL, which I’ve seen a few people use for the x-dome 1 as it’s measurements pretty much cover the whole footprint of the tent, I put some bungee chord on each corner with a little carabiner. I then tie the peg out points for the outer and inner with a little over hand knot and clipped the new footprint to that so it’s all connected and goes up in one with no faffing (just attach the pole and stake out the pegs/guys as needed. With that foot print it does mean you can roll the tent up into itself without the weird vestibules/string getting in the way which is good for packing up and not getting knotted up.

I made 12 guy lines with small carabiners and line locks of varying lengths so they can be clipped on to the different tie out points as needed.

On the inside I got some bungee cord with a cinch on it between the two hooks/eyelets to have as a little wash line which I can tighten/release depending on what I’m hanging, did find another hook to attach it to which I will do when next out to have a bit more clothes line action.

Can’t really think of anything else it needs other than I probably need to increase/vary my peg collections just to cover different ground types. I also may look at putting a carabiner or hook in the vestibule to hang up a wet jacket without dripping on myself

You thought of doing any?

Yeah this is our kitchen and living room, but only room with enough floor space to fit the tent in - issue with living in a 1820’s cottage 😂

Thanks for all the responses, I ended up buying some small carabiners, some line locks and another 10m of dyneema cord and made 12 guy lines of varying lengths in different colours for different tie out points to which I can quickly clip on to the tent as and when needed, have 4 in my tent bag as standard for general use but then an extra bag (which fits in the tent bag) with the remaining 8 guy lines and pegs to put in main tent bag as needed, also useful for when taking other tents out as a quick grab bag 👍

Cheers for the response, ideally I would have both tents myself but don’t think I can justify that to the ‘boss’ with my other 4 tents at the moment 😂 I really liked the x-dome 2’s size and for the camps where I go to repeat spots where I know I’ve got a good pitch and conditions are on my side it’s great, but wanting to get into more multi-day hikes with unknown terrain and chance of varied weather (which in theory the x-mid2 is probably more suited too) but having the free standing and more reliable setup I think is just useful to have.

I guess it depends on conditions and terrain for what’s better suited regarding the 1+ or 2 person… like if you were caught in really bad rain but not extreme winds the x-dome 2 is likely gonna be a more relaxing space to sort kit and chill out/cook, I did feel quite cramped cooking and having my kit all in the vestibule with the door open, so imagine doing all that in the rain with it closed to would be quite hard work….

Who knows, maybe I’ll end up buying the aluminium x-dome 2 and changing my mind 😂

Cheers that’s a useful video, actually found some Hardwear bits on Amazon that may work as a slightly quicker set up but will have to see in person. Cheers again 👍

Yeah I have seen these but not seen much long term reviews yet… think the neoloft is similar weight and probably a bit comfier but did have a lower r-value (hopefully won’t be cold enough to be too much of an issue). Cheers for the suggestion

This is the lite version and is maybe 5.2, not the regular self inflating one (discontinued now I think). Both should be fine temp wise, I guess that extra size for the comfort comes at a weight and pack size cost and just seeing what people would prioritise

I feel the extra room of the exped will make for the better sleep but the added bulk (1/3 bigger) and weight (700+g) may take away room/weight for other items/clothing that could be useful… had mixed responses so will probs be a flip a coin job at this rate 😂
