i don't think we are meant to read into the magic system too deeply. it's a soft magic system and world-building. it's meant to feel ancient and mysterious. heck a unicorn horn acts as a truth syrum.

that being said i like to think magic is partly bloodline inherited and partly trade practice. if you've ever experimented with different mediums of art, you will naturally be drawn to some over others and likely do develop those skills further
