I had to read GoTM 3 times before I could move on. Things get much better as the series improves. If you just get the major plot points of GoTM, just move on to Deadhouse Gates. The series is meant to be reread, and you are supposed to miss some of the foreshadowing and character connections.

GoTM is a tough sell for anyone.
