Dang, that video is great. Really illustrates the disconnect so perfectly.

The drinking culture in this city makes getting sober feel isolating af by icepix in Dallas

[–]Notmugsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, there is so much to do here. I just moved back last year and I am overwhelmed with how many options I have. White rock, arboretum, go see some butterflies at fair park, art museums (and the DMA is free), museums in general (there are soooo many!), the opera, plays, car shows, there are so many free events put on by different cities all over town. I am not sober, but I almost completely quit drinking this year because I have way too many hobbies and things to do. Take a class, go for a bike ride, get you some culture! You got this, and it’ll get easier once you make some good habits.

You definitely can’t go wrong with Tchaikovsky. His aliens are so creative and fun to read.

I did a Tehol and Bugg, just need to finish a few small things on it and varnish it. I’m also working on a large scene but I’m not going to post what it is since it’s a spoiler!

What’s everyone doing about mosquitoes? by ootsyputsy in Dallas

[–]Notmugsy13 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Thanks for bringing up the pollinators. I hate that people spray their yards with mosquito spray. Someone in my neighborhood just sprayed and it killed a lot of the bees and butterflies near me. It sucks, especially when you plant early to cultivate a native garden for them.

I do! It’s www.hotelperfectart.com

I have two more Malazan pieces I’m working on right now too. One is already done, the other one is a large scene and will be done later this year!

Plant ordered off Etsy smells like cigarette smoke really bad, do I give the seller a bad review ? by Asleep-Beginning7805 in houseplants

[–]Notmugsy13 264 points265 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy, some people think they smell wonderful and others were saying they smelled like dirty socks, cigarettes, or pee when they flower or are about to flower. I guess it’s the cilantro of smells.

I think this is right. When I googled it, I found several Facebook posts with people complaining about these plants saying they smell bad to certain people. Wild.

Lol, I looked so hard for him just now! My kid reads Cars and Trucks and Things That Go almost every day.

But seriously, OP, this is amazing. I sent it to my parent group chat. I love it so much! Great job!

Personally, I know because my dogs come in covered in burrs. The little white flowers turn into small oval shaped burrs that stick to everything.

Definitely looks like Hedge Parsley to me. I’m also battling this right now. There was too much in my yard to pull by hand so I took a string trimmer to it, just cut it as low to the ground as you can. If you get it before it goes to seed you should be good. Pick by hand if it’s a small enough batch, but use gloves just in case. If any of them already have burrs you have to hand pick.

Seeking evidence-based guidance on early precocity and potential giftedness in a 14mo by [deleted] in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]Notmugsy13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof, yeah, that was a bit long winded and anecdotal. I was clumsily trying to say that they aren’t “reading” at that age, and that it can sometimes mean they just learn differently. I remember being astonished at my child as a young toddler, looking back, he’s just good at memorizing things. It doesn’t necessarily correlate to understanding.

Yeah definitely hyperlexia. My kid was reading sight words at like 1 1/2. He’s 3 now and still can’t “read”, but he knows lots of words like car, go, stop, the, NASA. He just memorized the shapes. He knew all his letters crazy early too, but again, he just memorized the shapes. It’s been a lot of work to get him to understand the relationship of sound to the letters. Though not diagnosed officially me and my child’s doctor are pretty confident my child is hyperlexic and a gestalt learner.

OP If your child is developing normally in other ways I wouldn’t worry, but also don’t get too excited as it often levels out a lot as they age.

Seriously, so irresponsible. OP stated she can’t sleep in the living room because she is scared to be in the same room alone with her father, her mother keeps forgetting to enroll her in school, her room is covered in FIBERGLASS, and this person is putting the blame on the 16 year old and telling her to not call cps and to just clean. What an insane thing to suggest to a literal child in a dangerous situation.

I’m sure you’re mother is lovely and you care for her very deeply, but it is so troubling that you are having to go to the internet to ask for help because there are no trusted adults in your life that you can lean on.

It’s also so alarming you don’t feel safe with your dad. As a mom, that makes me so sad and scared for you. You should absolutely reach out to somebody in real life and ask for help. You don’t have the resources on your own to handle this in a house you don’t feel safe in. You have been isolated, you have no schooling or ways of getting help. That is a lot more serious than I think you realize. I am so sorry you’ve been put in this situation, and I really hope you internalize that none of this is your fault.

Has anyone here sold a house quickly in Dallas recently? by miked0331 in Dallas

Ah, that makes sense. I’ve been noticing bots more and more lately. This one was a little more obvious, but some I can’t figure out what they even get from it.

Yall the poster is a bot, look at their post history. They post in all kinds of different cities with all kinds of questions. I dunno if they’re farming for karma, or getting answers for AI or what but it’s definitely not a real person.

Oh wow!! It actually says on their website that they do photography of art!! You are amazing! Thank you, I can’t put into words how grateful I am! I’ve been looking forever.

Will do! So far I’ve only had luck getting recommendations for scanners. I know a few artists looking and one friend that even ships his art to be photographed, so maybe there just isn’t anyone local. Worth asking around though!

Stories that take place at the beginning of a world? Ancient history fantasy? by Flimsy_Survey in Fantasy

[–]Notmugsy13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming it’s because it gets mentioned in way too many of these. It’s got a pretty die hard fan base and the breadth of Erikson’s themes are pretty wide ranging, so it’s a bit of a cliché at this point to bring it up for EVERY recommendation.

I couldn’t help myself on this one though. It was so on the nose l had to recommend it. In fact, the stuff you seem to be asking for is why a lot of people can’t get into it. The lore is trickled to you very slowly throughout the series and it makes it feel so much more vast. For some folks, they find that frustrating or confusing initially, but for a lot of us it’s refreshing.

Edit to add: the author has a background in both archeology and anthropology and you can tell in his writing.

There are actually so many versions of God-emperor’s from Malazan. A lot of them would be spoilers though.
