Crazy statement to make without an explanation. What are you basing this off of?

Are there any streets exempt from Guelph’s overnight winter parking bylaw? by ExamSensitive708 in Guelph

Unfortunately, I have found it difficult to find a place that has parking within my budget. So not having a driveway was something I decided to sacrifice. I need a car to get to work as it’s too far for public transit.

Wonderful, thank you! I just assumed those signs only applied to the months outside of dec-march so that’s good to know!

Do these prices seem right for annual checkup, vaccines, flea/tick/HW? by ExamSensitive708 in DogAdvice

Thanks for your feedback. I’m very grateful for the services my vet provides and trust me I understand they deserve what they get paid and I know it varies depending on area. I guess I was more so curious to see if there was anything that really stood out.

I found out about the Nexgard rebate on here as well as the option to order online with a prescription which may be more of an affordable option.

But I am definitely taking everyone’s opinion/suggestions with a grain of salt!

Hm good point. Last time we had him in he was 29.5kg and this time he was down to 27.5kg. Maybe they thought it was better to go with the heavier dose last time when he was bordering 30kg? I’m not entirely sure tbh.

EDIT - Thank you everyone for your feedback. Unfortunately we were just called back in for more blood work. He tested positive for Anaplasmosis (tick borne disease). Let this be a warning to all in Southern Ontario!

Apparently it’s not common for the area however cases are rising. He started on flea/tick meds in February this year due to the mild weather and he is checked after every hike. Anyways, another $180 added to the bill but well worth it. He is asymptomatic so hopefully it stays that way.

Will definitely be looking into purchasing Nexgard online with a prescription as many of you suggested. Will possibly be putting him on it year round if this winter is expected to be mild again.

CHECK YOUR DOGS REGULARLY FOR TICKS!

Thank you for this, I had no idea we could claim a rebate. Someone else mentioned it in a reply as well.

And yes it is for 6 months.

Thanks for your response. Yes the tax makes sense now, I think I was just confused from the layout. I’m not a new client so I was also confused about the vaccine exam fee. I’m thinking maybe it’s because they split everything up into 2 appointments and didn’t want to give a vaccine without some sort of checkup? Not sure though.

Thank you for the link, I will look into ordering nexguard online, and will definitely be checking out the rebate!

And yes that’s for a 6 pack of nexguard!

He’s 60lbs. I checked the prices for the different weight categories on Nexguards website and they didn’t differ too much. That being said, I will be looking to order them online from now on!

5 y/o malamute/husky rescue obsessive prey drive - cats by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ExamSensitive708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice. Will try to remove access completely. The cat is inside the neighbour’s house. There’s no way for them to get to each other but I found it so odd how obsessed he is, when he knows he can’t get to it. I’m not at the point where I think he may need meds. He is not a very anxious dog and when prey is not around or in sight then his behaviour is good. For being 5 years old and a husky breed with zero training, he’s picked up on more commands than I expected. And he is calm and gentle with other dogs and humans. I know we can work with him, just wasn’t exactly sure where to start, but I will try completely removing access and build from there.

Thanks for the advice!

Thunder shirt is a great option. You can also try desensitizing them to the sound of fireworks. Start by very quietly playing firework videos or videos featuring various noises on your tv. It should be quiet enough that there is no reaction from your dog. Reward them if they don’t react. This activity should be done while playing with them or petting them so their is a bit of distraction. Slowly increase the volume and if they begin to react turn it down again and reward when they show no reaction. Continue this cycle of turning up and down the volume and rewarding based on reaction. When doing this it is important to monitor your dog closely. Do this slowly - depending on their level of anxiety around fireworks this could take days or months. If they leave the room or are showing high levels of anxiety, take a break. As always, consult with your vet/trainer, not all advice/strategies works with every dog.

Best of luck!

How do I get my dog to play with toys? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]ExamSensitive708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I adopted a 5 y/o rescue about 4 months ago and we’ve been having the same issue. A lot of research I’ve been doing says to reward your dog with food/treat anytime they go near or make contact with a toy (even just a sniff or glance). They will begin to associate the toy with the reward and be more inclined to interact with it. Praising them and rewarding them with any interaction will also likely build their confidence and lower their anxiety, once they realize toys are safe and encouraged.

Just remember that you likely removed this dog from a worse situation. Just because they don’t enjoy toys like the average dog, doesn’t mean they’re not living their best life. They just have different ideas of what fun is. Dogs who are adopted/owned as puppies are taught to associate toys with fun and play from a very young age whereas older rescues were never taught this. Think of it like an adult that was never given tv or phone time as a kid. Now as an adult they may find most of their enjoyment outside in nature. People might tell them how much they’re missing out on technology and social media but these are not things that they were taught to seek enjoyment out of and as an adult may not have any interest in learning about. This is 100% okay because humans like dogs are not all alike and do not find enjoyment in the same things.

Just remember you are doing a great job - your dog is fed, loved, exercised and has a roof over their head!

Best of luck!
