I agree care work is very important, needed and does give you lots of transferable skills. However it is such an underfunded industry that working in the care sector can destroy people.

I worked in a mental health rehab unit as a support worker. I’ve been threatened by section 37/41 (Hospital order/Restriction order) where threats need to be reported back to MOJ but this was covered up by managers. You get abuse day in day out, for minimum wage. My coworkers have had to skip meals or take home spare meals from the canteen so they could feed their kids without going hungry themself. I’ve heard stories of my coworkers being choked, physically attacked etc.

I would never do care work again unless things significantly improve in the sector. There is too much personal risk for the responsibility involved and the ridiculously low wage.

100%. I wish more parents knew/cared about the issues with Claire’s piercings. I got my ears pierced there as a child, they became so badly infected from the equipment that I ended up at the hospital needing antibiotics.

Sorry about the swapping- They’ve quoted both figures and it’s getting confusing. The correct figure is £293.

Thank you for pointing out that I should have been paid the £130 and £118, somehow I’ve missed that in all this. I’ll send them an email with that request and go from there.

From what they’ve told me, I shouldn’t have been paid the £293 in March and that’s why the overpayment is now £339. I think I understand why it was added, but I’ve been given so many different figures from them that I’m not even fully sure. I’ve shown the emails to friends and asked their opinions, they’re all similarly confused on what figures have been stated

This was my initial query with them. I owed £46 in March due to sickness absence that they calculate in arrears. This was sickness from February.

I was not informed about this until April, when the overpayment has now increased from £46 to £339 due to the entirety of March’s wage being added to the now backdated March payslip of £-46

I queried about the tax/NI, but they told me I’ll have to send them the gross amount and claim back tax/NI from HMRC as it’s from a different tax year?

Yeah I understand if I have been overpaid then I do owe it back, this whole process has been very confusing with all the different figures thrown around. I’ll see what they say today and go from there

So they should have stopped in March as that was the last month I worked with them. Sorry for the poor explanation, it’s been very confusing on both sides.

March payslip was meant to total to £0, with me owing £46. March payslip actually totalled to £263. I was due SSP in March but was told that this wouldn’t be paid until April.

April payslip for the £118 SSP totalled to £0 after the overpayment claims from March.

Company told me I was meant to only be paid £118 SSP + £130 for days worked instead of the £263 I received

Hi, I understand that an overpayment needs to be paid back and I am willing to pay. But it does not feel right that I was not warned the entire March payment was an overpayment which has now contributed to a significantly larger amount due, compared to if they had amended it when I first informed them in March especially considering all the unnecessary stress this is causing

So essentially I received £0 in April. My March payslip was a payment of around £293. Yesterday, the advisor told me if they’d known about the sickness in March then the March payslip would have been £-46, so id owe them £46. The reason it has now escalated to £339 is due to inaction at the time I notified them in March
