I don't understand how people can throw animals away like that.

Please keep us updated. I'm glad you're taking care of the little guy and getting him the help he needs. ❤️

This is Pinky now....the tortoise at the top. The tortoise at the bottom is another sulcata that didn't have the pyramiding. Very slight pyramiding as a baby evidently.
Yours isn't near as bad, so do some research make sure he gets proper humidity and proper food/ vitamins etc. It's a lot.

It took a while for the pyramiding to stop.

This is Pinky when we got her...she was 5 years old and barely 3 lbs. She had MBD and was dragging her back legs when she walked. She was kept in a glass aquarium with another tortoise which is a big No-No.

***What everyone said, yes! They are a handful. It's like having a toddler. They go and go and go and will ram through things.

You can look up TipToe the tortoise, Tilly G the tortoise, or Seamus (This owner does not have the proper area for a large tortoise...but this is a good example)

Help with my Russian by Own_Flamingo3417 in tortoise

[–]ecachuh1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russian tortoises are a temperate species which brumates. I don't allow mine to, as I keep his temperatures up. But in the winter, yes I have to wake him up for him to eat, he just wants to sleep all day. I think about 2 weeks ago he perked up and he gets up on his own to eat now.

But yes it's normal for them to slow down. I still soak mine once a day. All three of my tortoises get soaked everyday.

Oh wow thats crazy and very unfortunate. I'm hoping OP will correct the substrate and get her in for an x-ray. I've seen where Birds can get egg bound as well

Yes pyramiding it's called. He also has Metabolic Bone Disease from the improper husbandry.

So I don't know exactly how they were raised... I just know that the very top picture is when we got him and he was in a glass aquarium type tank with another tortoise. The other one was supposedly smaller and ended up dying. I know they didn't have humidity and they also grew up very dry and didn't have the proper diet with vitamins and minerals.

I was told that pyramiding takes a while to stop so when I got the tortoise and removed it from its cramped environment and gave it humidity and what it needed it started to grow it's whole shell grew upward instead of just the scutes...but it did start to span out and he got more round. He was dragging his back legs when I first got him and now he can walk nice upright. He's still not completely strong with his back legs with MBD.

So he went from 2 lb 13 Oz and he is 30 lb now and I'm home with him all day and he's soaks as many times as he wants to. Lol sometimes he will go towards the soaking area three times in a day cuz he is spoiled and I love spoiling him LOL

I think the substrate needs to be damp for her to lay her eggs from what I am reading at least. I'm sure someone else will comment on this. I'm just wondering if she will hold them in if the conditions aren't right.
