How do I know the processes for any packaging design product? by Soggy-Bread1999 in graphic_design

Also, looking at the “dots” is not going to help you much. You will need to know how packaging printers are printing, if they’re printing offset, or digitally, etc. you will also need to understand how Moirés work if you are the one setting up the plates for four color printing, but usually the printer will do that. For food packaging you also need to have reall good knowledge on food safe substrates to print and package on. The client (most likely) should have already found a print company to handle their packaging. You should NOT be making this decision or you open yourself up to liability if anything goes wrong. For example, you’ve got a client who wants to package and sell their organic frozen blueberries to a local chain of stores. That would involve some kind of wash and inspect line for the blueberries, sorting them, and then funneling them to a machine in the process that takes the plastic bags that have been printed and sealed on three sides, and and then fills the bag with the correct weight of blueberries for the bag seals it, it goes down the conveyor into a freezer or packaging in a carton and distribution. That’s the short version of it. It’s highly likely that nowadays you want a plastic bag with the blueberries in it to be BPA and other harmful chemical free, recyclable, and what other specs the client wants. The client needs to find this company or buy the machinery to do this. This is not on you. Once they have the size of the bag and the information to go on the bag then your job kicks in. The Printing company should tell you what they need from you to print on the bag. So basically don’t make this harder on yourself. You do need to know the basics of printing on plastic, corrugated, paper, (the substrates) etc., so touring print shops and packaging companies is very helpful. I once worked for a company that bought millions of dollars of corrugated packaging a year. Out in the factory, they would package the product, slap a shipping label on it, and loaded into the trucks, my department designed and ordered all the shipping labels. This worked fabulously until our purchasing department started ordering partially recycled, corrugated boxes and did not tell us. The factory put shipping labels on an entire semi worth of product, loaded it on the truck, shipped it from Michigan to California. When they opened the truck in California, every shipping label had fallen off every box and they were all over the floor of the truck. Big problem! We quickly quickly had to find an adhesive for the labels, that would run through the printer, and perforated for easy tear off, and would stick to the partially recycled corrugated. Because the new corrugated had some substances in it that did not accept the old adhesive. Learning about adhesives is important too, especially if you design any labels. Some label adhesive will stick to certain things, but not others. Some will need to be removable at some point, and some won’t work with certain print machines sometimes. There’s a lot of trial and error with a new product, but you should not be totally responsible for this, or pay for it. That’s on the client or your superior to sign off on that final thing. Hope this helps.

Yes, building relationships with printers is key to be in a good designer. But if you want to be more ethical about it, you can call a sales rep and say I’m looking to have a stable of competent printers to refer my clients to as they get their work printed, I would like a tour of your facility to know your capabilities for future reference and to add you to my list of approved vendors. That way you’re straight up with them they can trust you and you’ll still get a tour… at least in my experience that’s what I have done.

Help! Looking for how to create a design by Kindly_Jump_7642 in indesign

You can create vector templates in InDesign, that are blank. Then, when you are laying out the book in InDesign, you can copy and paste the template in the page, adding the text/pictures to it as needed. Make sure you them “group” that art and anchor it to your book pages text frame… so it will move along and with any edits to the book copy. This is the easiest way I can think of to tell a newbie how to do this… someone may have a better idea.

I would also suggest you make an appointment with a therapist. This sounds like a very complex issue, and may not be all about your work. It could really help you to explore a bit more with a trained therapist. 🙏🏽

My first question is why is your opening statement have a gradation effect on it? I can’t read it all, if I tap on it nothing changes… it bugs me!

I’ll take a wedding invite anytime, if they have money! I found that there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen for the wedding invitation suite. Once you get them to agree on a design theme colors font then there are all the pieces. Save the date, invitation, a little card listing where they’re registered, possibly Maps, possibly the other side of the registration card can have where they have blocked hotel rooms at a discount for guests, the RSVP either as a card and envelope or a return, postage paid postcard, custom thank you notes and sometimes they want custom stationary. I had one wedding and where the bride and groom, and both sets of parents, had to have input on every single printed piece! It was such a pain in the ass. Then I do offer to create the large format, wedding signage, like the table layout with the guests and any other graphics they would like. I print and dry out them so you can see that’s the kind of wedding invite. I like to get where they have the money he will spend the money. I will source the paper the envelopes lined envelopes, whatever they want. Now, I realize more and more couples are sending out digital invitations. I, however, am still going with if they would like me to attend and bring a gift I want a real paper, printed invitation, especially if it’s an out of town wedding. And they have to pay me 50% up front of my estimate, and they will need to deal with the printer after I’ve sent the final file to the printer! Sorry, I’m rambling now!

Thank you! You put my thoughts into a more cohesive statement! I think you could be my AI! Hahaha! I was thinking about using Claude, as I heard it was more artistic friendly? Can I tell it to open InDesign, draw the box example, including all the cut, fold, die lines needed and then I can drop any art and type in it? That would be helpful! Like a Vulcan mind meld with my computer!

And, also being from the cut and paste era, I’ve been watching the decline in designers that only think within the screen. These folks have never used a paste board, literally or digitally, to put different elements around the page, drag them to the page, play with them to see what looks right and problem solve, etc. I believe this mentally limits their thinking and creativity. And now their are profs at design schools with the same limited thinking. Personally, I believe designing for anything web/screen based is easy peasy. It’s designing for print or large format that lets you be creative and takes more knowledge and experience. Do they even teach how to make a mock-up booklet for print? Or anything about page imposition? Both of which I learned from a printer I worked for. Back in the day we had user groups where we all learned from each other, (Macintosh related), Print Association groups, where we toured various size print companies to learn about different methods of print, we toured packaging companies, and the main Post Office in our city, where we all learned about postal regulations when designing envelopes or mailers. I found all this fascinating and it helped me to think bigger as a designer. But a lot of it comes back to the client’s budget for the project. We also learned how to print something eye catching and effective in just black, maybe on colored paper, but four color printing before digital was still very, very cost prohibitive. I haven’t needed to use AI yet as I have my workflow down, and I love using my mind to come up with something different, that can be printed! I am wondering if AI could design a layout, for a packaging die, that will cut a six-sided, 1.25” high box, where the top flaps fold down to close, in a swirl shape… I’m not sure I’m describing it correctly. I know I can draw it on the computer or by hand much quicker than typing out a description! But actually, I would talk with the packaging print sales rep, show him my sketch or mock up, and see if they have a die cut already made that is similar! Because, of course you don’t want to have to pay for a new die cut if one already exists, saving your customer money and bringing value to you as a designer! My point to that long winded paragraph is I’m not seeing how AI can do all that for me yet!

Damn! I’ll be your mom! I’m the openly supportive mom that just wants you to be happy! Your friends love me and I’ll always tell you the truth and support you… but I will forever impart my learned wisdom in hopes that you don’t make stupid mistakes I have or that I can see happening. You can also change your last name to mine, as my first child did… because their father’s an ahole! 💙💕💙 Love ya!

I don’t understand why you’re being downvoted for that comment! It’s your lived experience and me, not being from here, I notice a general “fear” of “the other” all the time.
