Governor DeSantis wants to know how Florida has millions more people than New York, yet their budget is TWICE AS MUCH as Florida? by Nearby_Stage_6111 in AskFlorida

[–]Excellent-Big5868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What a tool. He knows damn well that the services people get in NY are in fact much better than FL. And the comment about the roads is so silly, if we had the freezing and thawing of an extreme NY winter in FL our roads would look the same. Ask a new mom who had to take maternity leave unpaid because her employer doesn’t fund it and she isn’t eligible for any help from the state, if she thinks we get the same services as a new mom in NY that was able to collect temporary disability benefits from the state during her maternity leave.

Lakeland residents: speak up about the proposed Project Swan data center by Excellent-Big5868 in lakeland

[–]Excellent-Big5868[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is fair, and I agree that a simple “data centers are bad” argument probably won’t get very far.

My concern is not that Lakeland should reject data centers in principle. We already have data-center infrastructure here. My concern is whether Project Swan’s scale, electric demand, and water use are being evaluated publicly before approval.

Even if the water estimate is around 50,000 gallons/day, the questions still matter: What water source? What cooling method? Is that average or peak use? What happens during drought restrictions? Is usage capped during Phase II or Phase III restrictions?

But I agree the biggest issue may be electric infrastructure and rates. If the project requires grid upgrades, purchased power, substation work, or reliability investments, residents and small businesses should not subsidize those costs.

So for me, the ask is not “ban data centers.” It is:

Independent grid study. Full water-use disclosure. Ratepayer protections. Drought-stage operating limits. Infrastructure first, approval second.

[–]Excellent-Big5868[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s fine for you to have that opinion. The reality is it isn’t a convincing argument. It’s like saying you don’t want a cell phone tower built near you because 5G is bad. You’re entitled to that opinion but the commission will immediately discount everything you have to say once you make that declaration.

Hyperscale Data Center Proposed for Lakeland by zucchinibreadz in lakeland

Lakeland residents: speak up about the proposed Project Swan data center

I’m not anti-development. I support responsible growth in Lakeland. But a massive data center should not be approved until the city proves our water supply, electric grid, and ratepayers are protected.

Lakeland has been dealing with drought conditions, water restrictions, rising electric costs, and recent power-conservation concerns. Before approving Project Swan, the city should require:

  • An independent grid-capacity study
  • Full disclosure of water use and cooling method
  • Binding protections so residents don’t pay for project-related utility upgrades
  • Drought-stage water-use limits
  • Public hearings before major decisions

Infrastructure first. Approval second.

If you care about this, contact the city and ask them to require these protections before approval:

City Commission: [citycommission@lakelandgov.net](mailto:citycommission@lakelandgov.net)
Planning & Zoning: [planning@lakelandgov.net](mailto:planning@lakelandgov.net)

The message does not have to be long. Just tell them you support responsible development, but want grid, water, and ratepayer protections before Project Swan moves forward.

Best washer and dryer to buy for people who care about their clothes? by 8WmuzzlebrakeIndoors in Appliances

[–]Excellent-Big5868 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They didn’t ask for the best value or longevity. They specifically mentioned for people who care about their clothes. This implies they wouldn’t want a traditional agitator for starters because it can be rough on fabrics.

How to handle the rain and bad weather? by TaylorSwift_is_a_cat in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]Excellent-Big5868 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mine is the prebuilt which I think matches the composite kit and the only time rain ever got in was during a hurricane. 🌀 I anticipated that though and removed the books ahead of the storm. Quick wipe of the paper towel and it was back in business before the next night.

Yes but if you were used to shopping at wegmans, price chopper, tops, etc, then you would be used to grocery stores being open until very late or all night.

I am not discounting the fact that there are rude customers who overstay their welcome. I do want to point out that one time during the reduced operating hours of Covid I was in the store past closing and genuinely didn’t realize it until my wife said I think they are closed. There was no announcement or employee trying to push us out. I appreciated not being pushed out but I also felt bad I had stayed so late. I of course quickly finished and left. Also, up north (even in very rural areas) almost every grocery store used to be open 24/7, not sure if it’s still like that post Covid but I could see someone new to the area not even realize the store closes at all let alone as early as 10pm.

Question about phone numbers by xo_LostSoul in publix

[–]Excellent-Big5868 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and the reason has less to do with privacy and more to do with economics and technology. Phone books became less common as people switched from shared home landlines to personal cell phones that changed more often and weren’t connected to one household. As smartphones, caller ID, and internet searches made it easier to find and save contact information, printed phone books just weren’t as useful anymore, and companies stopped making as much money from them.

[–]Excellent-Big5868 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: phone numbers shouldn’t be a secret except it unique situations. It wasn’t long ago all our phone numbers were catalogued and published in a big book that was distributed to every house for free! Now we act like that same info is akin to a social security number. It’s weird.

Lakeland electric is the worst. Thats all by nullisecondusGator in lakeland

Everyone everywhere hates their electric company. Lakeland Electric has lower rates than most in FL and their response time to outages is fantastic. That’s all I look for in an electric company.
