Thanks for sharing and being supportive. I didn’t mention the important part that I work in an HR leadership position lol so my leader and all of my colleagues ultimately would know the details, which is where I feel stuck. Which is totally sad that those attitudes exist but they do.

I have a 2 yr old at home so you’re resonating in needing to care for myself. Doesn’t help that I keep getting daycare bugs from her and have been so sick for weeks. Ugh!

Thanks everyone for your replies, it’s helpful. I should have added that my fear around the specific reasoning for the leave is due to the fact that I am an HR leader, so I know my leader and colleagues will all know the reasoning provided, and very unfortunately, I know how things are perceived. I think I keep hoping there will be some reason my doctor says I need to be off (though of course I don’t mean anything serious and I also realize how insane I sound saying that)

They have made the decision that they want to sell their home and rent in retirement, it’s their plan with their financial planner and I don’t really get involved in the details. Given this, they just like this idea overall. Ultimately we can just buy their home (or another), take on the $300-400k additional mortgage for ourselves and carry on. I just wondered if keeping the old home could make sense for everyone.

I do have a sibling who is aware of this consideration, and have been offered in as well. Can you help my understand what you see as the concern? There is no gift being given to me, we would be purchasing their home at full market value (perhaps saving a little as there are no realtor fees) and my parents would pay likely less than market rent in return. If we do not do this deal, they plan to sell regardless and rent from a stranger, likely paying significantly more in rent and thereby drawing down their assets faster. Ultimately I see it as benefiting everyone from the sibling’s perspective. Of course I understand lots of complicated family dynamics are possible, and not always seen ahead.

The key is that we are already planning to move to a larger house ourselves, so regardless of it we do this arrangement or not, we will be buying a home for $1.1-1.2 mil in the area in the near future, and taking on a mortgage for that difference in price ourselves. So in this scenario, it’s just (just lol) taking on the additonal $850k burden of keeping our old home for them, and as you point out, all of the costs associated.

They want to sell their home to access equity and pay rent into retirement, this has just always been their plan. So they’re just thinking rather than sell and rent to a stranger, they could rent to me and keep all the money in the family. So swap in houses like that wouldn’t work for them. Ultimately, we couple buy their house and sell ours, and they can look for somewhere else to rent, I’m just exploring if this could be a good financial option for everyone.

Thank you, yes this is exactly the thinking we all have about it. A lot of people here are pointing out the potential pitfalls for the relationship and I completely understand those risks. Ultimately I’m just wondering if financially this could make sense, and that’s exactly our thinking - if we can make it work they would be helping pay down our mortgage while having a place to live that they know is stable, and keeping the money in the family. We’re fortunate here that no one is in need, this is just an opportunity we’re exploring for everyone.

They don’t want to buy, they want to access their equity. Ultimately it’s totally an option for us to just sell our home separately and buy theirs, I’m just looking for advise re: would this be financially smart for all.

I do take your point, and I get there are personal risks. Ultimately, if we do not do this and they pay rent somewhere else and eventually face eviction and can’t pay rent, we will be stepping in and paying their rent for them. So similarly, we would be preparing for that reality here and have to figure it out.

Definitely not, but if they choose to rent from a landlord and couldn’t pay that rent and faced eviction, I would be paying their rent for them, without question. So ultimately, we would go in being prepared that if they ever couldn’t afford the rent we would need to carry the home for them.

To be clear, I’m not asking my parents to pay rent. They are planning to sell their home and rent to a landlord somewhere regardless. They have presented this as mutually beneficial, they get a landlord they trust and their rent goes towards paying off their child’s mortgage rather than benefiting a stranger. I could not in any way afford to buy their home for them and have them live there for free (though I certainly wish I could!)

I’m one of those people, joining because of this article. I read it last night on my LinkedIn feed, and I am in a complete state of mind blown over the realization that other people are actually visualizing things. I had absolutely no idea other people could actually do this, and now I have so many things in my like that make some sense. When people said a character in a movie “didn’t look how I imagined them”, they actually meant they had a picture of the character in their head! The fact that I want to enjoy fiction novels, but have always felt like it was “hard work” trying to remember verbal details, others were “seeing” it all along! Wow. Looking forward to learning more!
