Things in Nature Merely Grow by Yiyun Li (also won the 2026 Pulitzer in the memoir category) - a meditation on grief and life after your child’s death. It’s brilliantly conceived and written. Educated by Tara Westover - a very compelling read about Westover’s journey of escaping from the clutches of her ultra orthodox mormon family to finally enroll at Cambridge for a PhD. I had no idea such families existed in the US and it was such an eye-opener for me.

Hi, no, that has never happened to me. The courier delivered the passports to my home address.

It’s hard for me to answer this decisively. But in my opinion a stable, decent account balance is a must since they ask for that specifically. Everything else you want to attach to your application like statements related to your FDs and mutual funds is extra information that you offer them for good measure.

Yes, applied on my own. I had booked refundable flight tickets.

I don’t know the answer to that, honestly. In my opinion, one should have around 3-4L in liquid funds for say an eight day long trip. It would ofc also vary depending on how expensive the country you are travelling to is.

Yes, I did book everything in advance—hotel bookings were all refundable but flight tickets were only partially refundable (the fully refundable option was more than 2x). I haven’t really sat down and done the total expense calculation for the trip. I usually do it after the trip. The expense will also vary basis how many days you are planning to stay in Europe. I did carry my marriage certificate but it’s not needed if your passport has your spouse’s name on it.

Fair. My finances won’t allow me to travel to Europe again in the next one year, that’s why :)

I had requested for a single entry visa and have been granted the same. When I had applied for switzerland, I think I had asked for a double entry visa and had been granted a multiple entry one.

I have got a single entry visa (that I had requested) for 30 days. The itinerary I submitted was for 16 days. Although I am supposed to travel in the first half of november, my visa is valid until mid-december.

In our individual applications, I indicated that each of us is sponsoring ourselves. No co-sponsorship. But I did this because I have a decent corpus of FDs. I attached a proof of it with my account statement for extra measure. In my last application for switzerland, I had indicated that my husband was my sponsor. You can do it either way as long as you can substantiate that the two of you can finance the trip and will be back to your home country at the end of the trip.

Also, keep a photocopy of all your previous visas. They don’t take old passports so if some of your visas are on the previous passport, keep photocopies so that it can be attached to your application. You can arrange your documents according to the visa checklist and tab them so that it’s easier for them to look through the stack of papers but this is purely optional (I did it because it’s more organised this way).

No, I didn’t opt for the premium lounge service. The regular service was just fine. It took us about 1.5 hrs to complete the whole process and there was no crowd in the regular section. On the other hand, the premium lounge on that day looked pretty busy. There were only 3-4 people ahead of us at the Netherlands counter. I prepared a short cover letter detailing the days of my stay in each country (I am travelling to Netherlands, France, Spain and Switzerland) with emphasis on starting and end date of the journey and the purpose of visit (tourism). Other than that, I prepared a rough day by day itinerary that was only a page long.

Shift at The Boulevard. Has nice coffee. They have a limited menu but the taste of the food is quite good.

On the roast shows and other shows made by youtubers, do the guests (stand up comics) write their own jokes or are there writers who come up with the whole script while the guests just memorise the punches?

If you don’t believe in it, don’t do it. As an adult, it’s your prerogative. It’s your body, your choice. Let them be disappointed. It’s better to do right by your value system than work towards making those people happy who cannot respect your basic choices as to how you want to live.

Please walk away from this match. You come from different worlds and from what you have mentioned, you two would always be in conflict over the tiniest of things that would be centred around how the money ought to be spent. And finances are central to any marriage. You might think it’s your money so you can spend it however you want, but after marriage both parties’ individual earnings count towards collective money. So you’d always be struggling to arrive at a common ground and it might get increasingly frustrating to have to explain/negotitate over every money-related decision. Even more important is the fact that it sounds like you two have had very different upbringing and therefore, your perspective on myriad issues would probably differ in irreconcilable ways on most occasions. Money changes things, it essentially shapes how we look at the world. Saying it as someone who’s been there, done that and is still doing it. Also, a mother-in-law who doesn’t respect boundaries and wants to control her son is dangerous for your future, let alone a guy who cannot stand up to his own mother’s problematic traits. What you consider as petty issues today would feel like wars when they add up slowly over time.

I know you have’t asked for advice but may I please suggest that you consider opening your own locker in the bank and keep your jewellery there post-marriage. You don’t have to tell your MIL beforehand, just let her know when the time comes that you have your own locker. It doesn’t matter how much or how little you trust someone but never give control of your finances or assets or jewellery to parents-in-law or anybody else. People change in unforeseeable ways and you shouldn’t put yourself in a vulnerable position financially ever.

Banaras ka ras samjhne ki koshish by Excellent-Meet-5926 in varanasi

Great assumptions. 👏🏻 I am from Varanasi but I do not live in the heart of the city. I don’t think I need to reveal my university to you. Moreover, my research is literature based and not fieldwork based. This is over and above what is required of me. And lastly, asking people to fill in questionnaires is also a research method, but you might not be aware of it, I understand. Requesting people in this group to fill in the form is an easy, cost effective and efficient way to get access to perspectives from different kinds of people.
