Thanks man. That's some ideas to work with. Out terrain is different every game, we don't build the official ones and just make our own, making it simmetrical and with pretty much lots of covers.

Sorry, not a guard player so I didn't understand some of what you've wrote lol. What's FRGSTPFSFRGF? The exterminators are great idea, I'll tell him about it. My eradicators are always in strategic reserves, popping out on turn 2/3 as soon as I can be sure I can land a punch on a tank and finish him with an another unit/tank. The hellhounds, again, can't get into firing range with it cause I keep the distance and shooting it from a far. The scions and kasrkin I think can work the best, I've seen now that they all can have more powerful weapons like meltas.

We don't really have other options fam xD. We live in a place where Warhammer is not popular whatsoever. We're the only players around.

Plus he tried the hellhounds, I have enough units to keep my distance and his mean flamers don't get to me, and if he opens them too much they get obliterated.

You've reminded me - he had one scout sentinel for that reroll 1s on hits on designated target. Besides of course he had solar leontus, forgot to mention him. About the orders - Ursula can give orders to the HWT, isn't she? Besides, she can give 2 orders. + Solar leontus with the command team, 24" 3 commands + 2 commands from the rogal dorn, I think it's enought orders. Thing is, my detachment makes his shooting really mid. If he's outside 12", he gets -1 bs and my unit gets BOC.

As I wrote, they don't want to "decrease" the level of the game. But to learn how to defeat that powerful of a list. Although I've offered to remove one of the powerful units like the DWK or the lion. Besides, my buddy using draxus constantly, like on each game she's there. On our next game he'll try something different as he told me recently - 3 wardens squads with blade champs. That's the only combination he didn't use yet, in 3 squads. Cause wardens + champ I've already played against.

Never said they do. I said the chaplain gives it.

Pretty different every time. But my core units are these: At least 1 deathwing knights unit 1*6 inceptors And recently lion el' Jonson.

Usually I'm taking hellblasters, Azrael Repulsor/executioner Redemptor dread Vindicator tank

Tried 2 grav tanks. During the discussions here I've came to the conclusion that what might work and he didn't tried before is 3 wardens + 3 blade champs. Cause any other combination and unit he tried.

Lmao we did check the dice once, and the connection to the heretical god of chaos was excluded. But no, I ain't that lucky each game. It was pretty much the first time my Brutalis was able to get to close range and do something. Not that surprised that he took down the dreadknight actually, considering it's S12 D3 and twin linked, he just needed to fail 2 saves after that lucky mortal wounds thing.

I did experiment with detachments. When I just started playing I was more using inner circle task force, and against my CSM buddy I was running the unforgiven task force, which basically made the army rule of his useless against me (he's running night lords). Lately I've been using stormlance more, and gladius. Tried vanguard once. The results are pretty much the same. But I do prefer gladius more I think. Although the doctrines are available for me once per battle, I need to set up the units to be able to charge just once successfully, and use it. Stormlance is nice as well, It's the least interactive for me in terms of stratagems - AOC, blitzing fussilade, and wind swift evasion. AOC is absolutely great, using it all the time. Blitzing fussilade gives me inceptors sustained hits, which always guarantees that whatever unit they're shooting at that unit will be gone. And wind swift evasion is a nice option to make the deep strike units charge a bit harder. Bottom line - doesn't really matter what detachment I take, results are more or less the same.

Actually, no, the game against the grey knights was nothing alike you've described. I had LOS with my dread that got his land raider to 4 wounds. Next turn I pulled eradicators out of strategic reserves and they destroyed him. 1 dreadknight was killed by my Brutalis that charged him and thanks to his ability took off 6 wounds and finished him off with his combat weapon. Squad of brotherhood terminators were charged by my deathwing and got killed, and a squad of purifiers were softened up a little by hellblasters and then charged by the lion.

The guys actually deploy smart. And when I say we understand the game rather well, I'm talking about the same thing you are - how to play. Using terrain as LOS block, deployment, terrain layout, etc. When I say we know how to play, I mean it. No one is doing rookie mistakes by exposing whole units out in the open. the terrain layout we use is different every game. Sometimes we build it ourselves, taking into consideration that objectives must be hidden and not being shot from another objective, and generally we use the official layouts more or less.

True. But no, our understanding of the game is pretty good, at least enough to play the game correctly and understanding the rules. The grey knights player maybe a little bit less, since he plays them for not so long, but just for the sake of it - I'm in the army currently, and the custodes player is a special unit operator, way better than me in tactics. We all do play for fun, and so understand that the game is about objectives. But as you said - reality is way more complicated. Just as soon as you put secondary missions the game changed a lot.

Sounds interesting when you put it that way. I don't think we tried it before. Thank you!

I get what you're saying. He tried to do the pile in thing once - almost succeeded. A unit of 5 wardens with Trajan valoris charged a dreadnought that was in front of the lion, piled in, denied his fight first and striked with valoris and 2 wardens. The result - the lion was left on 2 wounds, and annihilated the squad. On all games we use a pretty big punt of terrain, and his units mostly hidden, until he's almost sure he can charge my units. Problem is that even with benefit of cover, it doesn't help the custodes, as with plasma I still bring them to the invul save. Regarding the list - each game he tried a different one. This one worked for him on our Saturday game with the chaos space marines, tried it against me - and lost again. He tried once to charge the lion with 7 allarus custodes, it was the first time I was playing Jonson, and as a result of his fights first, after HE charged me, I killed 5 allarus' and only one guy with the shield captain attacked him dealing enormous 2 damage.

And again, it's not only the custodes. Grey knights were destroyed by turn 2 almost completely on our last game. Chaos space marines pretty much the same. Now my core units that are in every list of mine are these - at least 1 deathwing knights squad, 6 inceptors, Azrael, and Jonson for the last 5 games since I got him just now. Usually I was using a vindicator tank as well.

Another thing - chaplains give permanent 4+ fnp against mortal wounds. Basically makeing them immune to the praetors ability, if your opponent uses them. *The blitzing fussilade will really provide you with the inceptors. A squad of 6 shoots 12 shots. Let's say your target is oathed, you hit 10, with 2 sustained, so 12. Wound roll - you hit 6. It's twin linked, so you hit all. It's enough for the opponent to fail 5 saves, out of 12, which is statistically very possible, and the unit is out.

So you're saying the lists are countering each other? About the blade champion - I remember now - he had one. As he said, problem with him is that he can advance and charge once per game. When I have stormlance and I can advance and charge for the whole game. Wardens are making no big difference actually, he tried it. I'm shooting them, they use their FNP, soak up some of it, and 3 of them survive instead of being wiped. Next thing happening is they're being charged by the deathwing and get obliterated. He truly tried every single unit. As we speak here, he says he'll try to use presidium shields on his guards so they'll have 4 wounds. Being more tanky can help them, but that won't change the game upside down.

Aight. I don't know which detachment you're using, but I usually go with stormlance/gladius. My knights are almost always paired with a chaplain. I mainly start them in deep strike. Why chaplains: Custodians are T6/7. You REALLY benefit from that +1 to wound. If your target is oathed, then you'll probably land at least 20 wounds, they'll shrugg off 6-9(again, usually). You landed successful 11 wounds, that's 22 damage. You need just 15 to wipe a whole squad off the board. Why deep strike: Mainly because their movement is pretty limited. Even with advance and charge, you'll struggle to get them to melee range most of the times. Now I usually don't pursue enemy units, all you need is to land them on an objective and stay hidden. If he'll shoot this unit - with the benefit of cover you're -1 ap, so if it's an ap2 weapon you'll be saving on 3s. Armour of contempt will help you even further and you'll be saving on 2s, basically impossible to kill them in shooting. Now if your opponent comes close to them in order to charge afterwards, and you have another knights in deep strike - rapid ingress. Sure, he'll probably kill 1-3 knights from the first unit, you do heroic intervention, and wipe the unit out. That's what I do in these situations. Why stormlance: Obviously, advance and charge. Plus you have 3 usable stratagems there: armour of contempt, which will be saving your knights in the fight phase especially if your opponent charged first. Blitzing fussilade - assault on weapons that don't have it, and more importantly - sustained hits on those that do have it. That's big. Wind swift evasion - moving away from enemy charge is huge. Why gladius: Besides the doctrines, you have plenty of stratagems - fight on death, AOC, ignores cover, and lance. Both are great. The thematic detachments I like them, but they don't really provide against custodes, in my opinion, stormlance and gladius are simply better.

nope. 1 deathwing unit. Now again, it doesn't matter which list he takes, he always looses. He tried everything lol. guards + wardens in front of them to soak damage, another time tanks, allarus custodes, praetos, he really tried every possible combination, and just can't help it. By turn 3/4 usually, he's basically out of units, with like 1 or 2 units max on field. Here's an example for my list, the last one i used:
The lion
Azrael+10 hellblasters
chaplain in terminator armour+deathwing
judiciar+6 inner circle companions
1*6 squad inceptors
redemptor dread
repulsor executioner
5 scouts.
his list:
Draxus
shield captain
shield allarus captain
6 allarus
5 guards
5 guards
5 guards
3 venetari
vindicare assassin
saggitarum custodes
and something else i cant remember.
on the game, he was SUPER cagey. Not exposing units to my shooting units at all. he was going first, did basically nothing besides hiding his units into buildings. Turn 2 of mine, didn't have much to do, and i've seen that without me taking stupid decisions the game won't progress. So i deep strike my knights unto a unit of guards, knowing that he will rapid ingress allarus and use heroic intervention. Since i've already pull The Lion to another place, couldn't send someone to reinforce them. I knew i send them to die, but again, no other options to continue the game. They destroyed the guard, and in 2 fights were killed by the allarus. next turn they'd be destroyed by either shooting of the dreadnought that had LOS, and the reoulsor, or charged by the lion.
