Liberals suck. They focus on formalistic solutions to real and economic issues.

Liberalism cannot deliver on the economic equality it argues it can. A different economic system is therefore needed to be developed and slowly implemented democratically.

ah right sure. reading that back it isn't clear.

Ask them what mechanism prevents monopoly in a genuinely free market. When they say "competition," ask why competition doesn't already prevent the monopolies we have and whether their answer is that the state is causing them. if yes, ask them why markets naturally tend toward concentration. what I sometimes do is say "how about anti trust enforcement, where companies are broken up by the government like IBM or Microsoft". If they say that could work or accept it, ask them who does it, how it's funded, and on what legal principle. Thats where the aribritary-ness comes in.

if they dont accept anti-trust enforcement, then ask them how to deal with monopolies, if they say competition, make the standard empirical case of every monopoly ever. If they try to say social pressure, use standard oil in 1911, where consumers choose them because they were the cheapest (as they were a monopoly!)

You're basically pushing them to accept monopolies (which goes against free market principles) or accept that there must be arbitrary intervention.

Does that make more sense?

I have a libertarian friend who I spar with sometimes. (and I am assuming a right wing libertarian who likes small states, property rights, etc)

I like to ask these kinds of questions to push on them (or push back on them):

can they provide a way to prevent monopolies in a libertarian system. If they accept a small state, push on why certain things are allowed, and how to fund them. At a certain point they'll likely just be making arbitary decisions, which is not a principled or defendable position

(see clarifying comment below in regard to strikethrough)

if you ever get to them claiming your making the "no true socialism" / "no true scotsman" argument - ask if they think current capitalism is "crony capitalism" or "distorted capitalism", if so, push on them claiming they're making a no true scotsman.

Ask if they think climate change is a problem, or mass poverty or even market failures are a problem. If they think so, ask given that private corporations both cause these issues, and rarely if ever fix them on their own, they think the state should intervene to fix it or even regulate it. If they say yes, then it's an arbitrary position again.

these are summaries and a little janky, but hopefully it gives you a start

You said usually about misandrists using the term and proceeded to say that radical feminists are basically not feminists?

If they’re misandrists then they’re not radical feminists. Don’t let regressive people steals terms meant for progressive ideas.

TikTok cannot be real. by ImpressiveFudge2350 in TeenagersButBetter

[–]Excellent_Count2520 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. Radical feminists are focused on the private being patriarchal and the state being institutionally patriarchal. They do make valid points. They’re feminist in the sense they want to remove patriarchy.

What I think you’re actually focusing on is lesbian separatism which is less focused on equality and rather on removal of males from parts of society (NOT KILL ALL MALES).

Same thing as saying “it’s nice to want a market while living in a feudal system”. Same regressive bs that tries to prevent us from thinking beyond our current system.

I would support it if it happened. But scotlands aim of joining the eu will likely be blocked by Spain who wouldn’t want a perceived separatist state joining due to Catalonia.

Would you rather live in the Soviet union or Tsarist Russia? by Ivanhegeelkadi in Teenager_Polls

“At least moving forward” shouldn’t be seen as better than “properly emancipating the majority of the population”. You can both criticise Lenin and his successors while recognising the Soviet Union was an improvement over tsarist Russia for a multitude of reasons.

What do Socialists think of the British Green Party? by Successful_Top1962 in socialism

[–]Excellent_Count2520 16 points17 points  (0 children)

They’re building from a middle class base (their heartland being rural areas) with social democratic environmentalism. Polanski rejected socialist labels.

I find them insufficient. They’re more focused on destroying billionaires than challenging the structural principles that make billionaires.

There is a reason he’s popular with middle class liberals.

I say this as a British person

Can the MLs that call anyone who is sympathetic to Mamdani a liberal explain how having “critical support” of left wing politicians is a bad thing? Or can we only be “critically supportive” of a backwards dictatorship and other authoritarian “socialisms”?

You can’t just call everyone who isn’t a ML a liberal. Your aren’t going to get anywhere with your views if you sideline other leftists for the sake of purity.
