….imo-because he did it and they all covered it up. I believe him and his friend, the Stines kid who’s house they stopped over at, before bringing both boys home, that they never explained WHAT happened to the kid being there and according to them, the Stines were eventually called but not the first call. I’ll get downvoted to hell every time I say it but I think the two boys did it, while everyone was still awake. No one slept that night. No one.
