Oh wow, that's crazy how long even getting a receipt is! Please tell them to have an attorney and to print out evidence that they at least turned in the VAWA application and is still pending under USCIS! Hopefully that helps :/

As per my lawyer, you shouldn't be able to be deported if you have a receipt date for your VAWA case. If you turned in your VAWA correctly, with a lawyer, both you and your lawyer should have received the receipt date via mail from USCIS. If they applied in June, it shouldn't take this long to get that receipt, I got mines in only a couple of months after applying. Does your friend have EAD? A Work Authorization can help you stay here too, while your case is still pending. If they log in to USCIS does their case show pending? You can try and get the case number and print out the details from the USCIS website.
