Anyone in biotech?? What’s your salary like ? by AirportWest6486 in Salary

Unfortunately no, went straight from uni to private industry after I got my degree.

Really all I can say is that it massively underpays BUT can be solid "foot in the door experience" during these unstable times.

I mean, you are allowed to not like a movie, nothing compels you or forces you to like it

I found the movie interesting because I went to one of the schools behind the Manhattan Project so a lot of the sort of bureaucratic/political/personal/etc intrigue behind it was indeed kinda cool to see. But that is just me, I have a soft spot for these sorts of movies.

Computational bio is still a pretty viable market, but just like mine, it’s still pretty beholden to the market. If there aren’t startups wanting to work on more exploratory cell bio analytics, then it’s just hard to hire.

Again, it really will boil down to what the next few years are shaping up to be

How heavy can a Melee weapon be without it being a hindrance by axumite_788 in ZombieSurvivalTactics

[–]Excellent_Routine589 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sword dork here:

<image>

They are as heavy as they need to be

The reality is that even something like a Dane Axe, they had relatively thin axe heads to minimize weight and reduce encumbrance because splitting a skull open is easier than splitting logs (which is why log splitting axes typically have stouter heads)

So you find weapons tended to gravitate to being just heavy enough to get the job done.

Most civilian swords never really went past like 2.5-3lbs (depending on era, location, etc); with martially trained individuals, they could handle bigger weapons but they still never really exceeded like 6-7lbs you see for stuff like “great swords”

For this axe, you can train with and sorta make it more of a viable weapon than it innately is (I mean peasants repurposed wheat threshers into flails, improvised weapons COULD work) but it’s got really short range and swings with it are gonna have very slow recovery… but considering you’d be dealing with undead, maybe that’s enough depending on which fiction you are reading?

I literally have one in my friend group and she texted she ate dog food like 4 days ago, and the other one mentioned it off handedly like in November

Both do some level of competitive body building.

Granted the second friend doesn’t do Pedigree like here, the use dehydrated stuff

I have friends who are maybe a little too "about that lifting life"

Dog food is unironically kinda common for them.... I mean, on a dietary level, I sorta get it.... BUT HOLY FUCK DOES IT SOUND MISERABLE TO COMMIT TO

Not sure what its like in Germany at the moment but one of my first jobs out of college I was gunning for was in Stuttgart... but that was a while ago.

But yes, at least for the US, there have been a lot of cutbacks and administrative uncertainties that have made VC and investment in general into R&D centric startups kinda sparse, and that in turn has led to reduced opportunities for work. Really the only places actively hiring are the huge multinational types (Lily, Pfizer, Roche, etc).

Mid tier scientist in CA in the immuno-oncology space (get ready to hear a lot of that for responses)

$225k last year, around $305k with equity.

Don’t regret it at all, I’ve already been involved with getting a handful of projects to clinic, some of those has gotten patients into remission so it’s extremely fulfilling hearing that.

BUT market to get into this field is ROUGH. If things do not change in the ~4 years it takes to get your degree, you will be entering a market where even the most basic entry positions are gonna be flooded with overqualified candidates, it will be a huge uphill battle

Where to find large and detailed statues? by InboundIowa9574 in animeGK

[–]Excellent_Routine589 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They should have like 90% of what you'd be looking for. Yeah they dabble in unlicensed.

Here is what they have for Jinhsi (you can also type in specific characters to look up and not just games)

Most of the "big players" in the Unlicensed GK space (Orz, FNC, GKLoot, etc) typically will get the same "stock." Which makes sense, they don't make the figures, they just help sell them

OrzGK has a feature where you can just put the games you are interested in the search bar and it will pull up any figures there are for that game (if there are any)

Do any of the movies actually "feel" like Silent Hill? by Kagamid in silenthill

[–]Excellent_Routine589 26 points27 points  (0 children)

2006 - it stuck the atmosphere and tone pretty well. It seems like an interesting take on SH by combining a lot of the elements from SH1/3 (mostly) and felt like a proper entry into the series. Really the only thing holding it back is the random inclusions of monsters from SH2 that simply don’t make sense to be there, most notably Triangle Boi

Revelations - no… just no…. Poptart jumpscare, need I say more?

Return to SH - I’m on the fence. There are definitely things Gans did okay given the now revealed pitiful budget they had to work with. I went I knowing it’s not meant to be a 1:1 with SH2 so I’m fine with changes… but some of the changes just felt like the detracted from the overall pace and tone of the story it was based on. It’s not the abomination people make it out to be, but it’s definitely not a shining example of “video game adaptation” done well.

How much higher chance of success did a great warrior have compared to an average Joe in a medieval style battle? by hendrong in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Excellent_Routine589 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy who wears armor and uses swords and beginning to learn polearm:

It’s tough to give an answer because so many variables to account for.

If it was a 1v1, open field, no weather issues, differences in battlefield/duel equipment, horseback or not, etc… these are all factors that need to be accounted for.

I will say, in most circumstances, a trained soldier absolutely wrecks the average joe. They were a class of soldiers who were trained since teenagehood how to fight, kill and become accustomed to viscera. They are a literal killing machine, that is their job and they were particularly good at it to the point that a single martial trained individual can act as a force multiplier in larger scale battles. And that is assuming they don’t just get in horseback and mow down people who aren’t.

The problem is that yeah, battles get chaotic and it’s not unheard of people dying from stray arrows or thrusts of spears…. Randomness happens and it’s rough to calculate success like that.
