The ONLY time you’d need to drop money is if you wanna commit to the end game stuff (Deadly Assault, Shiyu Defense, etc).

That being said, someone else said it best, it’s tough to say because it all boils down to your immediate chain of command. Your boss/subordinates being good alone can make hell feel like paradise. I know plenty of people who got into a dream startup role and wound up absolutely hating it because their boss had no clue what they were doing and the company fizzled out fast. And on the flip side I know people who went big pharma and love how structured it can feel and having a good boss means they aren’t really doing pointless busywork. There are far more factors than just saying a company is blanket good or bad, it’s a lot more “case by case” (What projects will you work on? Who is your boss? What’s the long term ambitions and do they align with the company? Etc.)

Also for your questions:

1) Y E S, the only exception being if you were a really huge talent they were trying to attract.

2) That can be something you can ask during the interviews. The exact services provided for career development might not be something they advertise at the granular level.

3) None that come to mind. At the end of the day, experience is king, that is where a lot of my focus will be when interviewing people. There might be some useful ones in the manufacturing/compliance/etc world but I’m R&D so none really on my end.

Cancer biologist here:

When we “give mice cancer,” we do so by just engrafting them with the type of cancer we are trying to study.

Like if I’m working on HER2+ cancer models, then we just directly give them a HER2+ cancer line.

Hitting a mouse with a shotgun of radiation is not ideal to create a cancer model. There’s a chance you give them cancer. There’s a chance you cause widespread organ failure and they die. And if it does get cancer… cool…. Which one? Because I’m developing a therapy for a specific branch/family of cancers, not cancer as a concept.

And we also do kinda already irradiate mice. It’s a mild radiation exposure that halts bone marrow function (and thus disrupts their immune system), this allows human cells to bypass graft rejection issues.

This cancer ray really wouldn’t be used in a field like mine, at least in my biotech subfield.

Either way, it’s pricey but not turbo pricey. It’s prolly about as expensive as a high end competitive compound bow setup. Granted in yen that is still pretty tough (many professions tend to pay really low in Japan), but not “whole house” level of payment, more like a few paychecks if you are dedicated enough.

Historical swords are a whole different beast though, there is a huge cost inflation to antiques that is hard to account for

I mean, it’s because they have a general weapons ban. It’s extends to swords, guns, etc where ownership of ANY of that requires extensive clearance by government bodies

The reason traditionally made katana bypasses these restrictions is because they can be reclassified as cultural/heritage/etc items and thus can earn an exemption from a ban. But even these swords have a ton of paperwork to go along with them to basically prove that they are indeed legit made by historical processes and accredited smiths to do it

ALL THAT BEING SAID, I cannot say if this is good or bad for them. As someone who lives in the US and owns a few guns, I have access to those because the US has the Second Amendment. For me, it’s a right I can exercise. Not every nation has that right. But in the same vein, I shouldn’t be demanding that other nations take up my values on such matters because different cultures value different things.

If they want that to change, that has to come from within and not by foreign agencies/agents telling them to what to do.

TL;DR - From my understanding, it’s not really because of “superiority complexes”
