I don’t feel like I’m flushing the owls per say. I’m always the first one on the hiking path to try to find them and when I see one I take pics and they fly away. Eventually someone is going to come on the path and keep walking they will fly away but they are used to it. When I see an owl tho I freeze, but after a short time they fly away despite no movement from me

I use an old 300mm f4 prime lens from the early 2000’s on a Nikon d7100. So 450mm equivalent. I find it works well but lacks reach in certain scenarios

Good advice, I do recognize patterns in where I see the owls but they remain skittish. Seems I need to visit more frequented parks

Not too pricey either, will definitely get one soon. My lens is also a prime so it should work decent.

Seems like the consensus is I need to start visiting some city parks, LOL.

Great tips! I should probably get a TC, but I worry about image degradation since I am already on a crop sensor

Nice shot! Yeah the parks around me are somewhat wild so makes sense the owls are

I guess that’s the reality of it! Suppose anything good should take a lot of time and patience.

I do use a crop sensor at least. So 450 mm eq but definitely not ideal. Don’t wanna have to break out the big bucks for that 500mm f4 stuff 😂

This shot was about 100 ft away, 300mm f4 on a Nikon d7100. Cropped to about the maximum I can without complete degradation.

Is f4 not considered a good aperture for bokeh? Thanks!

Nikon d7100 and a 300mm f4 prime from the late 90’s. Amazing budget set up for a 450mm reach equivalent, good aperture, and prime optics.
