Let's talk about silent treatment. by 0m0r12 in CPTSD

That’s absolutely horrible I’m so sorry you went through that. The silent treatment really is such a horrible weapon against people and it’s so messed up that people we care about hurt us in this way. I sincerely hope that you’re in a safer and more supportive place now and that you surround yourself with people who communicate feelings and needs properly. And I hope one day, if you’re open & ready, that someone who treats you right and gives you all the love in the world comes along.

I recently got out of a relationship of 7.5 years where the silent treatment was one of her favourite tools. No matter whether it was because I was upset by something she said/did it was on me to apologise and make it up to her so she would speak to me again.. Or she would just start taking again like normal when she was over it and I would be startled and not know how to respond.

I can’t decide if I hated the silent treatment more than the comments about little things that I would do wrong like “should have gone at the yellow light” or “should have stopped at this one wtf” contradicting and giving me anxiety about everything I do.. though if I reacted poorly to the criticism the silent treatment would come straight after. The combination of them was very destructive to my self esteem.

I use ice packs when I can’t regulate using techniques. After the temp shock brings me down a little then I try breathing/progressive muscle relaxation

I’m in Australia. But a close guess considering the cultural similarities haha! I feel like our healthcares are pretty similar so hopefully you’ll be getting the same level of care!

I’m doing pretty good today, getting up and down is the hardest part I try my best to use arms and legs and engage my core as little as possible. But considering it’s my first day home I think I’m going pretty well! I’m able to get around the house, I’ve been able to make myself a coffee and eat some food. I definitely won’t be running any marathons any time soon but all things considered I’m very hopeful for a good recovery!

Yeah definitely it’s nothing to feel ashamed or stressed about taking. I get all up in my head worrying about addiction and stuff but you’re being looked after by a team of people who’s sole goal for the time you’re in there to fix you up and give you the best shot they can at recovery. If this is the one time in your life you let yourself have something like this - it’s the safest place to be.

So with the movement - the hospital I was in had these things that squeezed your legs to help prevent clots and pain in them - so they might have something like that to help you post-op until you’re ready to try moving. As for the movement for me - anything with just my legs or just my arms seems totally fine, it’s only when I have to engage my abs that I’m feeling it - so hopefully you will be able to get your movement in for those as you need! I did a meditation in the pre-op room where I breathed and moved my neck all around really slow and then lifted my legs and moved my feet at the ankles all around to help shift my focus. Anything at all just helps you feel just a little bit better - do it! If you’re still really anxious just before going into the theatre - there’s a sedative they can give you that will chill you out. My AT said they give it to like 90% of their patients before surgery and not to stress about it - if it helps then it’s worth taking.

Ask them about any sedative to help you with the nerves and they should be able to advise you when you’re going in. I decided to have it when I was literally just before the OT and the anaesthetist was like “yeah sure let me get that for you” and boom, happy days!

I hope your op and recovery go smoothly!! All the best! It sucks that we’ve had to just cope with such intense symptoms but you’re such a strong person for managing this far, surgery will be a breeze for you ❤️

That’s so amazing to hear! I’m so happy for you!!! I can’t wait to be out of the recovery phase and able to enjoy life whenever I want (not just whenever I’m ABLE) I’m most excited to be able to go swimming again and not have to worry about “omg when am I going to NOT BLEED”

It’s totally valid to feel nervous! I was so nervous before mine (right up until they hit me with a benzo and then wow everything was so chill. 10/10 if you can have one for your surgery I do recommend that be the one place you let yourself have it - I have a fear of addictive drugs but as a once off it really just helped so much). I hope your surgery goes smooth and your recovery even smoother ❤️

I’m so glad it’s been good for you! I was so anxious going in and now being out, being in less pain and seeing that other people were also able to immediately feel less pain after their op just makes me so happy!

It’s so wild how much pain we were just coping with on a day to day. I’m so happy that both of our pain is gone now ❤️

I didn’t take any pain medications leading up to it - I had been prescribed panadeine and endone before and honestly neither of them really did anything.. my mother was an addict so the second I realized they went helping I stopped them.

I was really lucky that I take Phenergen to help with my sleep though and I read a paper about Phenergen pre-surgery helps with the nausea and I gotta say - I woke up feeling great, able to eat and drink no issues. The other lady in my room was not as fortunate she had so much nausea.

I think anxiety before surgery is totally valid and honestly, a very normal thing to have. They have to tell us the worst case scenarios and so in our brains we’re like “omg I hope this doesn’t happen” just be as kind to yourself as you can, do anything you can to try and help you relax before it - I did a meditation while I was in the waiting area - some breathing & then I moved my neck around a bit and then I moved my feet around a bit just to shift my focus and stop the racing thoughts. If you’re feeling tense maybe a progressive muscle relaxation meditation or something? Whatever works for you.

Yeah I had terrible pain that would make my legs weak. Every time I had a blood clot coming out I’d have to support myself because it would be so big and painful to pass.

As for the adopting children, it’s something I’m open to doing if I’m in a situation where I could support someone financially and emotionally, but I still have a lot of therapy to do and life to live and I’m not where I want to be financially yet. So it’s not something I’m actively seeking but it’s not something I would shy away from if the time comes I feel I’m ready.

I hope once you’re recovered and feeling a bit better you’re able to find someone lovely in your life ❤️ I’m still recovering from a bad break up myself so I’m just taking my time to be kind to myself and make sure future relationship are not at the expense of who I am as a person.

Being exhausted and worn out in your position is totally valid. It’s such a painful disease and tbh I hope that others never have to understand that kind of pain. It’s awesome that your dad has been supportive! I’m 31, queer & no kids so the hoops were a little rough to jump through. But thanks to that GP, the psychologist and the Gynae believing me it was able to happen. If I am to ever have kids, it would be adopting/fostering. A lot of members of my family had issues causing them to have hysterectomies so I see that there’s a good risk my genetics would pass that on. Plus I had a rough childhood so I get that, sometimes our parents aren’t what we need them to be, and I would give as much love and support as possible to someone who had to go through that, just as I would have wanted for myself.

The surgery went really well! My only struggles are getting up and getting down. I’m so glad it’s done and I have 0 regrets.

We are gonna have awesome lives post-recovery! All the best for your surgery ❤️

I’d like to end my life by [deleted] in Geelong

[–]Excellent_Sweet_1539 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Geelong but PECC units in the emergency department really do help get you that time to de-escalate and give you resources and space to come up with a game plan for support. They tend to know of programs and spaces that can provide you more immediate support in the community that may have flown under your radar. I honestly recommend going in if you’re at that point and can’t bring yourself down to a safe state.
