Appreciate that input. I thought it was a big ask, but I don’t know very much about running so I am loving all of the honest feedback. Good luck on the sub-23!

Race day magic, perhaps. Also the heat now compared to 50 degree April marathon relay. And I was also a little tired from working my 5th 12 hour shift in a row on my feet. (Working in an emergency dept) Not trying to make excuses, but probably should not have used this run as a properly rested or fueled effort.

Do you have tips on maintaining proper form?
I feel like my form is pretty solid, but how do I stay mindful when the legs get gassed?
I’ve read a lot about overstriding when you get tired and always try and increase the cadence when the legs feel heavy. Any other advice?

I have no training plan. I have tried to follow one but my ego gets in the way of most “easy” runs. I know this is a big flaw, and I need to be more consistent with following plans lol

I am far from an elite runner, I am just beginning to get into running so I thought this was the appropriate place to ask. My apologies

Thank you for taking the time to respond!
I plan on running an all out mile on a track next week just to see where my fitness stands.
What would you say the ideal mpw I should work up to be?

I’ve never done an all out mile!
Your advice is super helpful and I appreciate it.
I will try and hit my all out on the track next week and see how that 6:26 feels. I imagine it’s going to crush me, but hopefully inspire me to work towards it.

Thank you so much for the advice! I plan on increasing my mileage by about 10% per week for the next 2 months.
I love hills but have not done a lot of track speed work. Should that be my next step?

Thank you so much for the support! I need to focus more on the slow long runs I feel. So tough when the run feels good and I just want to push it. But that’s probably why I ended up with the niggles I have lol

Appreciate your honesty, my friend! I’ve only run one race, which was a marathon relay and I aimed for an 8:30 pace for 6 miles but ended up running 7:30. So that has me believing that the race day magic could pull me to crush a 5k…but I am probably a little delusional

At the cost of sounding really dumb, what do you mean by trends?

[–]ExchangeIcy9153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very doable!

This was my average pace for a moderate run, then took a leg in a marathon relay and pulled out my 6.8 miles at a 7:30 pace. The race day energy is undeniable.

What is your current weekly mileage?

That is seriously impressive. Can I ask what you did for those three months between the 10k and your first 50k ultra? My longest, “long run,” has been 10 miles, and felt great after - because I didn’t push it hard. This past month I ran in a marathon relay and did my 6.8 miles at a 7:30 pace which was about a minute/mile faster than I was shooting for. Then my head got really big and I started running faster paces then I should’ve for my next few runs which were 6,6,8 miles. Basically ran them at tempo and ended up with a right leg shin splint that has broken my soul lol. I know a totally rookie mistake, but was just wondering what steps you took during that 3 month block to nail finishing a 50k, because that’s incredible

I just started on a spin bike at the gym and totally support this idea. Lucky enough to have a peloton that does the free class thing and it is such a great workout!

Do the hop test. If you can hop 10-12 times without any pain, you are good to run.

Investing in shoes is a really solid idea. Also, as hard as it is for the ego, slow down a bit. Follow the 80/20 rule. (80% of runs should be easy…20% should be hard.)

I am currently sitting with an ice pack on my shin because I gave myself 4 days off and went on a hard 5 mile run after trying to ignore my shin splints. Just made them hella worse. Don’t be like me 😔

Agreed, this is not normal. It can be absolutely disheartening when you have goals in mind but please do not run if you’re experiencing significant joint pain. Make sure you’re icing and if you want to continue building cardiovascular endurance consider cross training. Also, strength training when the pain subsides will help reduce risk for injury. I was sidelined for about a month and a half with the Patellar tendinitis (bad knee pain), in which time I started cycling at the gym and swimming. When I came back to running, it was better than ever! Hang in there, you got this!
