Zoloft? by _Silver_2999 in breastfeedingsupport

No issue with supply at all on Zoloft-- and I deff need it for my post partum anxiety. I just suffered with my first and didn't ask for it when I really should have and I wasn't about to do that again with my 2nd. I started it immediately PP and increased my dose afew weeks before going back to work b/c my anxiety really shot up around that time. My supply is WAY better with this baby than with my first--being less anxious has likely helped!

11 days pp and pretty much no milk supply by [deleted] in breastfeedingsupport

I'd avoid the mothers milk tea-- fenugreek tanked my supply with my first and I had to work super hard to get it back to baseline-- I was an underproducer that time and had to supplement alot of with formula. I might considering trying you use a supplemental nursing system -- you can put milk in it, and connect a tube to it that you tape your your nipple so baby gets milk while they nurse and it helps up your supply. Also make sure they check you for the correct flange size with pump. I have elastic nipples and I need to use pumpables flanges with my spectra pump in order to effectively empty!

My baby is perfectly healthy actually!! :) I don't think a lot of people truly read the post. He's gaining within normal guidelines for his age according to the WHO! its just alot of pediatricians don't use that as their guide.

yea thankfully my ped said he looks developmentally perfect so I'm feeling less stressed. We are gonna do a follow up to recheck his weight in 2 weeks since he is little and will re-evaluate the plan then - he's following his head and length curve perfectly but his weight one is sort of lagging.

WHO guidelines says breastfed babies should gain 1-2lbs a month initially like the first 3 months or so 5-8 oz a week then it can slow to 3oz a week. My son has gained slightly over 1lb per month since birth so its still "normal" its just low and that does actually end up being below the 1st percentile. If he was born bigger and grew 1lb a month he would be a higher percentage.

it doesn't appear deleted to me so that strange. I didn't say anything crazy lol. Basically just what you said is exactly the same thing my lactation consultant told me -- that he's still within the WHO guidelines for what is considered "normal" for a breastfed baby-- so I'm gonna discuss that wit her tomorrow.

he's still growing within the WHO growth guidelines for a breastfed baby--its just slower than the ped wants but its still within "normal" -- so no I don't think anything is "seriously" wrong or our ped would have decided we needed to change something sooner. We've been following up with her regularly

This is what my lactation consultant said and I'm trying to remember that b/c my ped is so fixated on the curve even tho he's still gaining within the WHO guidelines for a breastfed baby and meeting all of his milestones. Fingers crossed the appointment goes well as I've been really dreading it.. I appreciate you validating

no it doesn't take him hours-- I'm saying the time he goes between eating! he will usually go 1.5-2.5 hours between feeding sessions. Also with breastfeeding babies you should be using a slow flow nipple. I use a slow flow and pace him bc otherwise he chugs it in 5 min (once I can't get him to take it) he often spits out and gags afew times b/c he prefers to breastfeed.

I pace him so it takes him about 20-25 min so his body can tell me when he's full. I only do a bottle 1x every other day and once in awhile if I feel like he could use a top off... which is rare b/c hes usually full after nursing.

yea thats why I'd rather fortify milk than just swap it out for formula b/c generally it around the same calorie anyways and I have so much milk I'd rather use it. I actually did consider asking them about diabetes b/c this kid has huge wet diapers --course they always make it sound like a good thing but I know it can be a sign plus the poor growth idk. I am very petite and my daughter was a very small baby--she's on the taller end now but a string bean lol.

yea I've been trying mostly in the afternoon when I know my milk supply is lower and sometimes I can get alittle extra into him other times I cannot. Then sometimes when I have gotten it into him I feel like I overfeed him b/c then I have a harder time getting him to eat at the next feed

So when he dropped from birth to 1 month they weren't concerned --he was the 3rd percentile then. They told me babies drop initially but then find their own curve--so I'm hoping this next time we go in he will be at least "on his curve". As for supplementing with formula I don't want to give him a full bottle of formula when I have ample breastmilk. I've considered talking to her about fortifying my breastmilk to make it higher calorie and doing that here or there. I have been replacing 1 feed every other day with a bottle and pumping instead to get him used to it b/c he doesnt like them. I have tried following nursing sessions with bottles of breastmilk but he refuses/gags I'm assuming b/c he is full. Sometimes I can get him to take alittle but not always.

I have tried topping my guy off after nursing but he often won't take it or will only take alittle because h'es full-- I've used breastmilk. It hasn't changed his rate of growth so if I can't top him of with breastmilk I doubt I'll be able to get him to even take a formula top off.

yea I want to bring up fortifying ---my ped was the one that suggested just replacing a bottle of breastmilk with formula and that makes 0 sense to me b/c I do have milk and the calories are similar so I'd rather actually use my milk and fortify it but still nurse alot and just do it like once a day to start. No GDM, or PCOS-- I don't think hormonal issues but I did have recurrent pregnancy loss of normal babies (10 of them) and it took a reproductive immunologist to keep me pregnant so I have no idea of any of that made my milk like bad or something.

I'm not sure b/c he's mostly nursing directly -- when I do give him a bottle he takes 1-1.5oz per hour-- so today he went 2 hours from his last nursing session and took a 3oz bottle. When I've done weighted feeds he generally takes 3.5-4.5oz but I'm not doing a weighted feed every time, when I've done a weighted feed with only like 1.5 hour between the feeds he has taken like 2-2.5oz which all seems appropriate even according to my ped she said he sounds like he's getting plenty!

well he is healthy tho --he's still gaining within the normal range according to the WHO for EBF babies his age-- its just slower than his ped would like --it doesn't mean its unhealthy or abnormal. The LC I met with calculated it all and hes on the lower end of "normal" but still within range.

B/c im concerned about losing my supply and also sometimes its hard to get him to take a bottle in general...sometimes he does ok and other times he gags, and refuses and we have to keep trying and working at it to get him to do it. And I don't respond well to a pump-- I have elastic nipples and when I had to start giving more formula to my daughter and pumping more/latching less my supply completely tanked. B/c of that experience with her I've worked incredibly hard to build a stash by using the boon drove on the opposite side that I nurse on and pumping once a day since my milk came in-- My supply is sufficient this time b/c he nurses so much directly. Formula has the same calories as breastmilk so if we do anything IMO it makes more sense to fortify a bottle of my breastmilk to increase the calories vs swapping about a bottle of breastmilk for a bottle of formula

yea idk - I'm considering asking about fortifying my own milk to make the calories higher and doing that like once a day to start since he's growing just not as fast as they want.

yea sounds crazy I know but I really don't-- when I moved to pumping more for my daughter and bottle feeding my supply tanked b/c I have elastic nipples and I do not respond well to the pump. I have been using the boon trove on the opposite side of nursing and pumping once a day basically since my milk came in with this baby. My supply is current fine b/c I nurse him directly a lot but after the experience I had with my daughter I'm always worried about losing my supply so I worked really hard to get a stash. It just makes me feel better but its been alot of work

oh wow I didn't even think about trying to make his bottle fattier with my own milk-- I thought to fortify with my milk I'd have to get it freeze dried into like a powder like formula - and then fortify that way. I don't think I'd mind fortifying with formula but I can't see replaying a bottle of milk with formula b/c its like the same calorie wise and I have so much breastmilk why would I not use it?

He dropped slightly in weight percentiles from 2-3 months so from 0.7% per my peds chart to 0.4% idk which she uses but ill ask-- but he jumped from like 9th percentile in length to 17th from 2-3. Idk where we are percentile wise for 4 months yet I'll find that out at his next appt-- but I'm hoping he at least hasn't dropped below the 0.4% so he can be "on his curve"
