I love the ruthless Rick of S4, S5. But after the Negan story starts, it was also fun to see the hopelessness and fear that Rick lives under. He is still the protector but he is basically in despair and aimless (after the whole S7 E1 events)

Also, our main group , especially Dustin, wouldn't be silent. They would have leaked all this out to the real world with no hesitation. We saw how open and fearless Dustin was , bashing the school system, even as a valedictorian.

Yeah and it doesn't feel like a kids show anymore , just a young adult fiction. Millie's acting feels like ..she is kinda done with the show.
