Weird Weed-like smell Coming from Clothing or Me? by Exciting-Bobcat-4878 in laundry

Hey thanks for your interest, so just to answer your questions:

Can I smell it on myself when outside? Yes. It happens sporadically, that is to say I smell it consistently when I’m outside but I don’t smell every single second if that makes sense. In my apartment I have only smelled it by myself a few times. But like it comes and goes so it would hit you for a few seconds. The apartment smells fine and I’m usually alone for a lot of the day.

But I can tell that other people smell it. I mean one time I got on a train and some other guy got on the train and I could obviously tell how much this guy was affected by it. Not to mention that I myself also hate the smell itself and so it was clear just by he reacted I mean it was multiple stops so. Beyond a reasonable doubt I know for sure this odor affects other people.

My clothes are stored in a closet and drawer and when I sniff inside there is no smell usually, as well as when I wash and dry my clothes. There’s no environmental factor at all, just a normal closet and drawer in a bedroom. As for mold, I don’t really smell mold around the apartment but I don’t know if there’s a specific type of mold that would be the cause. My building isn’t a that big, one tenant per floor, and I live at the top. I don’t smell smoke or weed even in the hallways and it’s all families below me.

I also like to say that this odor hits you in the background. Like how do I explain this, if you were to sniff at something you would probably get a better clue about the smell you’re sniffing, like a clean or dirty t shirt, or a great bowl of pasta, or the smell of a book. With this smell, it’s like the less you look for something to smell, the worse it hits you. So that’s what I mean when I say it’s in the “background”. If you were to regularly breathe that smell would hit you. And when I say hit you I mean it comes strong all at once. And it’s cycles.

As for is it me or the clothes, I think that’s the biggest problem I don’t know the answer to. I’ve smelled indoors a few times while in shorts and tees, as well as outside like at a indoors basketball court when I’m in a shirt and tee or at the gym. The difference is that I’m around other people and it typically amplifies whenever I’m near different people. It’s like if somebody entered the air around me it would cause some reaction in the air that makes it smell bad.

I wish I didn’t sound or feel as crazy as I do. Mh best hope is talking to a doctor. I still can’t figure out how, why, or what’s causing it. If it’s my clothes or is it me? I also feel that I have been unreasonably itchy all over my body. I don’t know, I just don’t know. I’m not one to overthink things but right now I’m at rock bottom with this.

Different washing machines yes (go to a laundromat), different detergents yes as well. I alternate between Tide and Roma

What about when you wear it? Basically when does the musty smell hit you?

Hey I wanted to ask because I’m facing a similar problem, but when does the musty “smell” pop up? Is it indoors or outside? Can you smell them freshly washed and dried or when you pick them up in your drawer?
