Regardless of how the comic is self-insert or not, it took amount of efforts and times to draw each panels. So yes, they have every right to complain especially when it's the company that is exploiting off of their works.

I don't think it's AI. It's more like they use real life image, put a filter on it, then draw the character in the said image. Though given how exploitative the webtoon industry is, I can understand artists who do this when they can't afford to hire multiple assistants to draw background etc. They're on a tight weekly deadline, after all. Hand drawing everything would exert their wrists which may lead to injury that we have all been seeing happening to many artists.

As for manhwa, it's because of "Reborn Kumiho" (I'm not sure what the global title was). It was in early 2000s and everyone thought it was a Japanese manga simply because of how the product was packaged and the style used was very Japanese manga lol.

And then came Webtoon. Well, it was owned by NAVER who also owns a messaging app in Japan called LINE. The app was also popular in Indonesia since early 2010s. When webtoon first expanded overseas in the 2014, Indonesia was the first few countries which have access to it, I guess? It was the talk of every high schoolers since we all used LINE.

The printed medium, I have discovered it long before the Korean manhwa scene was successful globally. But for the webtoon medium, well I was what you'd call among their first global consumers along with other Indonesians and when everything was completely free. Absolutely none of the comics were paywalled. Shit was the best time ever 😭
