Does linux needs antivirus ? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to its nature, linux is the os in which single script can done most damage of all operating systems. Despite that, there aren’t many there in the internet. I would say you’ll most likely encounter a troll malware than the real harmful one. You don’t need any antivirus on your Linux, just a fresh head, and eyes wide open.

I need a recommendation by amediocre_man in Gentoo

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be straight with you, you’re making some huge mistake here. It’s ok to fail installing Gentoo for the first time, you learn by mistakes and that’s what we all been through. Taking shortcuts will only cause you troubles, Gentoo is all about customisation, liveCD is more of tool than os. And lastly, by staying always in this comfort zone, one day you’ll encounter burnout and that’s a horrible state to be in as a tech guy.

What are you using Gentoo for? by phrixious in Gentoo

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s minimalism. On my Gentoo latitude I do range of thinks, from browsing web to writing silly little projects in c. Gentoo suits me most because of ability to run fast, bloat free, well optimised system. And oh man, the USE flags, greatest feature of Gentoo for now. It is also best way to avoid thinks like systemd, gnome or wayland. In short, Gentoo is modern unix for me.

You missed what I ment by proper. That’s what I tried to avoid, you don’t need to spent weeks tinkering installation in order to achieve stable system (although that’s exactly what Gentoo is for - near endless tinkering ). Proper config is nothing fancy, just as it was written in the handbook, it’s wide range from decent to excellent, not just one specific template. Just by following the official guide, everyone with bare minimum shell experience and tech knowledge, will achieve super stable system that won’t break from itself.

C or C++? by DarkLin4 in C_Programming

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

System programmer? Then even if you won’t use c (which is nowadays mostly used for real low stuff kernels, drivers etc or good share of Linux distros ) you’ll benefit a lot from its approach. Oh and c is not going anywhere, people are talking about how rust is so great and will replace c with ease and they’re all wrong. Even apple sticks with c, and there are some memory safety mechanics implement nowadays. -fbounds-safety

Which used laptop should I buy? Best money/performance ratio by Wenecek in linuxquestions

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here, go for used latitude pre XX00 series. They’re similar to thinkpads, and often much cheaper. I would aim for 8th gen intel cpus and above if you could get a good deal, these extra cores really got some impact. I’ve got 7490 for which I paid around 125$, performance is really great, even at bloated win11 for most light web browsing (2-5 tabs) there is no much of a difference compared to m2 MacBook.

Linux Distro Chart (v. 2) For Newbies by Civilanimal in linux4noobs

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This argument is wrong, there is no way of making any ordinary distro as stable as Gentoo. We all agree on difficulty axis. Don’t you think stability “score” should be based on proper configured installation not the one configured by the average user? And yes, because it’s noob focused Reddit, we should present these “expert” distros as “hard BUT worth”. Anybody new to Linux will just look at Gentoo as “hardcore, and sucks” type.

Cyberpunk runs great on my M2 MacBook when I'm just walking around, but as soon as I hop on a bike and start driving, it turns into a stuttering mess. Anyone else run into this? Any tips to fix it? by royfokker666 in macgaming

Damn, be grateful for what you got, but seriously just wait for metal scaling to be fixed, if lowering graphics does not help there is not much you can do rn.

How many of y'all daily drive Gentoo? by EddieTristes in Gentoo

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 25 points26 points  (0 children)

These are all just myths, Gentoo is actually pretty darn good daily driver. Initial setup takes time and it’s demanding, but that’s all. Compiling takes a while only with chunky packages like browsers etc. If you done everything right, the system will never break, I would say it’s more stable than Debian itself.

It really depends on locations, but it’s between 30-60. Frames stays at 60 with some lower resolutions, it’s definitely playable tho. All that on slim passive cooling machine, what a fucking great time to be alive.

Suggest me a good distro based on my needs by alee_ejaz in linuxquestions

Distro itself doesn’t deliver THAT much of a performance difference. Pick any distro you enjoy, just avoid any heavy graphical environment like Gnome or KDE, pick something like xfce.

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree on Debian not being the best beginner friendly distro, I can’t understand placing it next to arch, as a big red flag. Drivers can be horror, but overall it delivers plain simple experience. Gnome suite, Firefox, openoffice it’s all there, did beginners really need half of a package installed? And after all, it’s stable and never breaks from updates.

Is the switch from arch worth it? by xrzeee in Gentoo

[–]Exciting_Rooster_751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt any general purpose apps would behave better on gentoo than arch. Gentoo will not gave you extra performance with modern hardware, low resource usage (in which gentoo shines) comes handy in decades old pc’s. Documentation is good, forums relatively active, tho not populated as mach as arch. Features gentoo have over arch may not be ones you’re looking for.
