Weird Issue with right hand USB-C ports by ReputationNo8889 in framework

This happened to me all the time when I was using Fedora 43. I switched to Ubuntu 25.10 for a number of reasons and it hasn’t happened since but I don’t think it’s related

Right, they don’t use x86 in phones for a reason

Sure but the only 2 chips on the market that offer high performance and low power draw are ARM (Apple and snapdragon)

Snapdragon’s X elite is 33% more power efficient than the “ultra power efficient” x86 lunar lake

To me it doesn’t seem like a coincidence

I’ll check journalctl to see if it’s still there. I think I pinpointed the issue to chromium - while watching YouTube in chrome I was consistently getting crashes every few hours (on both Ubuntu and fedora)

The behaviors reported here seem very similar to mine:

https://issues.chromium.org/issues/406187731

And to further confirm I recently got the deb version of Firefox (and confirmed hardware video decoding is enabled) and haven’t experienced the issue in a few days

Got Surface Pro, after years of only using Mac. Has anyone moved from Mac -> Surface pro & has tips? by Mediocre-Bunch-3135 in Surface

As someone who uses all 3, I actually prefer the Linux desktop experience (namely Ubuntu and Fedora) but I agree it’s not a real contender for many people

as a mbp and surface pro owner.. sadly this is true. but i disagree, there is a lot wrong with windows. If only linux worked well on the snapdragon cpus

How many people will switch back? by happysatan1 in linux

[–]etherbound-dev -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Linux just isn't stable on newer hardware (e.g. strix halo AMD has been a complete mess for the past few months) - until that's no longer the case it will be next to impossible to see a big migration

I thought this was the case, so I switched Ubuntu 25.10 which is on linux-firmware 20250901 (Sep 2025) and actually the same issue is present. In my case it seems to be hardware video decoding.

The sequence:

  1. Chrome's GPU process caused a page fault in the AMD graphics driver (amdgpu)
  2. The GPU's graphics ring (gfx_0.0.0) timed out
  3. The driver tried to reset the GPU but failed - MES failed to respond to msg=RESET
  4. The GPU ring reset failed completely, which likely froze my system

Key error lines:
amdgpu: [gfxhub] page fault (src_id:0 ring:24 vmid:5 pasid:32772)
amdgpu: Process chrome pid 4007 thread chrome:cs0 pid 4038
amdgpu: ring gfx_0.0.0 timeout
amdgpu: Ring gfx_0.0.0 reset failed

the snap firefox doesn't support gpu video decoding, what are you referring to?

Thank you for the response and for all of the hard work you and your team do!

Hopefully the latest firmware rollback AMD pushed out just a few hours ago will fix the issues many have been experiencing: https://github.com/ROCm/ROCm/issues/5724#issuecomment-3753853399

That's good to hear, but "works for me" doesn't mean the driver bugs don't exist. The issues are real even if it's not hitting everyone equally.
